My chicken math is pretty modest compared to some of these stories. I wanted 4 (four) hens two years ago. I wanted to order from My Pet Chicken because I could get a variety of breeds and hence a colorful egg basket. Where I live, MPC's minimum was 8, so in May, I ordered 8 planning to rehome 4 of them down the road to a neighbor who also has chickens. One was DOA, and I fell in love with the other 7. After an expensive hoop coop purchase, it rapidly became obvious that 7 large fowl wouldn't be able to winter in there, so we bought and adapted a metal building for the girls. Of course, they need heat in there (electrical work) and a fenced run. (I'm married to a saint.)
The metal building was REALLY cold winter before last, so last summer I insulated and finished the inside for them. It is 6x8. 6x8+48 sq feet -- perfect for 12 chickens, right? So I bought 4 EE's and a BO from the farm store last summer. Lost one of the original ones to laying problems. Now we are down to 11 again. I decided to get a roo for protection and so the girls would have a boyfriend. I adopted a roo from a poster here at BYC and after 2 painful weeks of isolation, he joined the flock. In the meantime, my GLW died suddenly for no apparent reason. We are back down to 11. HMMMM.
I told my DH that I didn't want a larger building in order to control my need to exercise chicken math. He gave me a funny look, but now he understands.
