Explaining Chicken Math

Up dating my chicken math... again.
I wanted 6 rescued what was supposed to be 20 turned out to be 40, Found homes for 31 which took us to 9. Built a coup in 8 hours for $300.00 bought feed and supplies so my first dozen eggs actually cost around $500.00. Now you take my original six which is really nine and we lost 2 added 4 plus the 2 gold lace wyandottes we got today. The math looks like this:
6+(40-31) +1 (7x8 coop)+4+2=time to admit we're chicken addicts and need to build a bigger coop.

I am guided by city laws that say I can have no more than 5. I'm holding firm to that thus far. Although I am certain that next year I will want babies again.

I had to look up posts here to find out what this chicken math thing was I have been hearing about. I understand now.

Hi my name is TattooedKeeper3 and I suffer from chicken math.

Last year started out wanting to help my previous landlord raise chickens on his 16 acres. We got 25 from Ideal Poultry. They all turned out to be roosters

But that was ok. I started out designing a coop for him to house at least 100 hens. After a month of having the 25 I talked him down to 25 if possible but we ended up with 50 heavy laying hens of various breeds. So then we were up to 75. Then my mother calls needed to rehome her flock of 2 roosters, 5 hens, and 2 ducks. I said ok we had plenty of room. Then went to designing and building coops for them. Out of Mom's flock we ended up with all of them minus one duck because she disappeared shortly before I could get them. Now we were up to 82 chickens and a duck. After a while some of the roosters ended up dinner lowering the number. Then my landlord couldn't continue to pay for the growing feed bill as his chickens were getting bigger and bigger. So I had a friend who needed to start her chicken business again and we sold everyone except 4 hens in the hospital pen, 4 roosters, and the duck, my mother's 5 hens and their rooster.

When we moved in December we only only had 9 hens, 1 rooster, and a duck out of the poultry.
Come March I only had 4 hens and 8 chicks from the previous bunch. I made the mistake of going to Tractor Supply on chick days. I saw a little black duck, the runt, getting walked all over. I couldn't have that so I bought it and the only other black duckling in there. Well they needed buddies so I also bought 2 mallard duckling. When I got home I had to many ducks plus chickens and had to find homes for some. I kept my 2 black ducklings and 3 of my baby chicks I hatched and my 4 hens. The others went to my chicken friend. They were so happy because they lost about 200 eggs I think when their incubator malfunctioned.

Now I have to have will power anytime someone says "Oh you have chickens, do you know of anyone who could help me find a home for such and such chicken/rooster?"

I never thought chickens would be so addicting with their cute little clucks, squawks, chirps, peeps, shaking their tail feathers, the side eye looks, chicken antics, and much more. I am hooked on chickens.

The only problem I am seeing is that you don't have enough chickens.

This is why I love this site. I feel normal lol. For a while I felt like the only one going from nobe to 26 chickens & blubbering chicken info nonstop to ANYONE who would listen. My poor mom stopped calling for morning chats because I overextended her modest love of chickens. It's an addiction. 1 is never enough nor 10 or 20. Someone always has that cute chick or rehoming hen. Not to mention the breeds you have always wanted & suddenly become available when you least need it lol.

Yes I had to make a bargin after I brought home 4 ducks that I wouldn't bring home anymore feathered or furry surprises. We just can't afford the feed for the amount I would love to have right now and we are leasing.

No one said anything about a limit on plants yet....if the weather would make up it's mind here....hot...cold...hot...freezing...hot again. Poor animals and plants don't know whether to bloom or shed their winter coats.

I want fluffy haired chicks of all kinds, Jersey Giants...lots of them, some silkies, a few more easter eggers, and just for the hell of it some naked necked chickens one day.

You know, you would be in sooooo much trouble if you lived in PA. Lurk in the Pennsylvania Unite thread when you have time. 99% of our conversations are exactly what you just said. So and so has this, and the person te minutes down the road has this. Show up for person A's 2 this, and six other chicken people will be there to give you fifteen to fifty other chickens/ducks/peacocks/emu...
They all hatch first, look for homes second!

I'm new to this site and chickens too! We just bought 4.5 acres. I've always wanted chickens so we talked about getti g 10 chicks. My friend and neighbor wanted to do it with us so we figured we would get ten each and build a coop on the property and share in the responsibilities and eggs. After looking online and seeing the shipping fees we decided to go on Craig's list. We found a lady who was selling pure ameracanas. We were going to get five total-we ended up bringing home 8. Cause they were straight run and you know some may be Roos! Then I found a guy selling silver laced W's. we were only getting four but I came home with 9. Then we found another lady selling sex link and Easter eggers. We ended up with 15 from her! Then I discovered black cooper marans and HAD to get some! I found a lady who had some and bought 7! So now I have like 39 chicks! Sme are my neighbors but the marans are mine! Husband now has said no more! But I found some Wellsummers ...so we will see!
