Explaining Chicken Math

Surely we are not responsible if our hens decide to hatch out baby chicks. Thats their fault not ours!!! We should not count any chickens that result from them deciding to brood.

I am in total agreement with that. And technically... these 22 don't count since I was only ordering a couple so my son wouldn't be upset. They were necessary, not just for fun. So they don't count either right? And since 8 were packing peanuts, they don't count for sure!

Started with 25 and lost 3 over the past year. Just hatched 23 chicks but lost 2. Broody hen is sitting on 10 eggs ready to hatch any time and I have 26 eggs in my incubator.

Phew! We're hit with chicken math for sure! I just need to fix up a second coop for the new ones and I think we'll be alright.

I believe I said that my husband asked me how many chicks I wanted just moments after I decided no more, then asked if I wanted an incubator.
My birthday was 2 weeks ago, and I got a small coop. It only fits 2-4 birds (4 if you realize they are going to be pooping in the nestbox that is not separated). That coop was broken when I got it, but 15 minutes after getting it together, a storm ripped through, and demolished the coop (yes, I am very lucky no birds were in it). I made arrangements for DH to pick up another coop down where he works (the only TSC that had them left) and said we would return this one locally. In the back of my mind I kept hoping he would fix this one,, and let me keep it. He did! So he is paying for the fact that 27 became 37, then 36 (she was half dead when I got her). Then whatever hatched in the incubator. However, I still need more room!
Last week DH asked if we needed to build another coop!

The man is GIVING me chicken math!!
BTW, the eggs in the incubator are due in a few days. They are just test chicks. THEN I will be getting a shipment of BCM eggs to replace the hens that I bought that are not laying dark enough eggs. I need to sell some chicks!!

Hi, my name is Tom . I am a newbie. How do hens who get broody know if the eggs are fertilized, so chickes happen, there with ?

We've had them go broody on golf balls and marble eggs too LOL They go broody when they go broody. Even if the eggs may not be fertilized. Ours are in with a roo, so there's no way to tell if they aren't. We just let her brood, and if in 21 or so days we don't get chicks then we go in and remove the eggs. After fighting the incredibly ticked off hen of course...

While she's broody, the other hen uses a different nesting box so we still get eggs. Just not the four or so she happens to be settled in on.
