Exploding eggs?

They typically explode if they have some sort of bacterial infection, which increases the pressure inside of the egg (they emit gasses, which can cause your incubator to seem 'smelly', and sometimes the pressure causes actual liquid seepage through the shell, called 'weeping'). At a certain point, the shell can no longer contain the pressure and it will explode on its own. Other times an egg will be on the verge of this explosion point and will explode with any amount of aggravation (ie, being picked up or handled or bumped by another egg). This is generally why people remove any eggs they candle that are not growing chicks.

When one of these egg bombs goes off, several things will happen. The first and most serious consequence is that it will most likely spray infected material over your good eggs, risking infecting them as well, as egg shells are porous. It is possible that your other eggs would be in danger of dying if they become infected. The second and less 'serious' consequence of letting one of these go off is that your incubator may never smell the same and you will be smelling a rotten egg the likes of which you've never smelt before and the smell will cling to the insides of your nose for weeks. EDIT: Chances are you will also vomit the first time this happens, because it really is that bad of a smell. It is NOT something you want to have happen if you can possibly help it.

You forgot the 3rd thing that could happen to a first timer... violent nausea immediately following an exploding egg hitting you in the face.
