I live in NH. Wondering if I need to provide extra light to keep the gals laying during the fall/winter and if so when should I turn on the light? Anyone out there that doesn't use artifical light to keep them laying? Thanks

I have a wise chicken-loving friend who had this advice for me. She said if people add light, they should add it in the beginning of the day instead of the end of the day. If the lights go off at the end of the day when it's dark outside, the chickens will be stuck and not be able to find their way to where they spend the night.

She also said a good way to get eggs through the winter is to add new hens every year (she rotates her flock -- gets rid of older chickens and adds new ones every year).

I think I'll follow the 2nd plan myself.

Best wishes!
