Extracting Gapeworm

Sorry this happened to you. It’s very hard online, choosing to believe someone who is offering information. I always try to corroborate with a source like the label on the package or manufacturer’s website.

Best of luck!

Thank you for the information. Just to confirm dosage, the correct dosage should be 0.1 cc per 10 lbs not 1 cc per 10lbs. That decimal point makes a big difference! The Safeguard instructions indicate a dosage of 0.6ml per 25lbs for goats. I bought more Safeguard and will start treatment again today for 7 days and see if that works. Did your vet indicate that you should retreat the flock again 14 days following a 7 day regime in order to kill any eggs or were you advised to keep treating for 14 consecutive days?

That is the goat dose, chickens get much more per pound than goats, horses, and cows.
*Ignore the dosing instructions on the bottle!*

The dose shown in the quote below is = 22 mg/kg and if given for 7-14 days might treat the gapeworms.
Vet told me to treat the rest of the flock with Safeguard at 1 cc per 10 lb bird for 7-14 days.

Picture from the Veterinary Parasitology Reference Manual - Fifth Edition

This book recommends 30 mg/kg for 5 days, which is ~0.14 ml per pound, but only five days.

The label on the Safeguard products are not for chickens, so one usually needs to ignore instuction for treating cattle, goats, horses, etc., and since the product is not labeled for chickens, the manufacturer will not publish dosing information for animals not listed on the label.
