Hello,

It is extremely cold here...-11 overnight, with -25 wind chills. Our coop is insulated with a deep bedding of straw, and our run has two heat lamps. We have one larger hen (who we previously believed to be healthy) that has been isolating herself in this extreme cold. The other 8 hens in our flock have been huddling together for warmth, but she just lays in a nest, away from the others. She seems to be eating and drinking normally but it’s hard to tell since we haven’t been outside with them for long periods of time. Is she just too cold? Should we bring her inside? Or could she just be doing her own thing? This is our first winter with chickens so we don’t have anything to compare it to.

Is there room for her on the roost? Since she is larger, can she easily get up to the roosts?
Depending on your setup, maybe the nesting boxes are more out of a draft, if there is a draft.
Or maybe it is easier for her to jump into the nesting box than up to the roost, depending on her size.
