Extreme Cranial Swelling-Graphic pics

LOL..I have a Boxer, a Bully, a Yorkie and now a ShihTzu/Dachshund mix pup.. not a one of them pay him any attention.. Im sure they just figure mom has lost another screw.. I am def saving the info in the link, never know when it could come in handy :)

See photos on The Poultry Site Disease chart shows two similar photos--one is swollen head, the other is a type of dermatitis.

Thank you, I am going to check that out now,,He is still doing great, no issues since and acts like it never happened.. His face is always going to be 'wrinkled' because of the massive amounts of swelling but thats the only after effect

I have a young pullet w the same problem. She has had this swollen head for about 2 weeks now. Her symptoms are exactly the same as your cockerel had. I tried antibiotics but after research I quickly stopped. My mother also has prednisone left over from a bad poison oak reaction. I'll start her on that today.
Did any other birds in your flock ever get whatever this is and how is the cock today?

Hi, sorry to hear about your girl :( If it is indeed whatever my boy had, she has a good prognosis. He survived, no one else ever came down with anything even close..He is quite the cocky little man today (he can walk completely under my RIR roo and not even bump his comb..lol..His face still has a wrinkled look to it where the skin was so stretched, but it doesnt phase him in the least.. He does have his own little band of 3 hens, but we dont ever incubate those egss just in case it was a genetic issue. I never did find out what caused it and he has not had any flare-ups or anything since. Hes as healthy as any other bird in my flock.
I did use the prednisone for a little over a week I think before I ran out..and I kept his food moist when he was at his worse so that I could be sure he got enough fluids and I kept Sav-A-Chik (both the probiotics and electrolytes) in with his moist food around the clock.. He does have an issue with crowing, but I dont know if it is related to this or not..
Best of luck..

It's so good to hear an update about your little rooster. Nice to know that he recovered and has been doing well.

That is good to hear that you never saw it again. It really seems to be the same thing to me, all the symptoms match.
I only have 4 prednisone 20mg ea. Do you remember the dosage you gave him?

I honestly don;t remember what does I gave him.. I just dissolved a few tablets in hot water to make a concentrate and then added some of that to his to his moistened food every morning and evening. Im going ot go back through my messages and see if I can find the dose I was given

WEEK 1 : 2.5mg per day WEEK 2 : 5mg per day WEEK 3 : 2.5mg per day WEEK 4: 1mg per day.

You can also give 1 Bayer baby aspirin to try to reduce the swelling before you try the prednisone if you havent already
