Extreme Home Makeover... Am I the only one?

Well, Katy here it is in a nutshell. TV show cast travels on tour bus to the person's town, watching a horribly sad and moving video on the way. Said video could be something like "blind single mom has 7 kids who all help out and get good grades, but little Timmy is in a wheelchair and can't get around the house very well....and now they've discovered toxic mold and termites are eating the house... and the single mom babysits all of the neighborhood kids for free.... and they could really use a new house.

SO, said cast members show up and pretend to surprise the family unexpectedly, even though the family comes out of the house in 2 seconds flat with coats and makeup already on even though it's first thing in the morning (and they all happen to be fully mic'd of course). They all tour the house, and sure enough, it's horrible, and so Ty Bennington and his TV pals send the family to Disneyworld, who all act totally shocked even though all the families get sent to Disneyworld on almost every episode.

While family is having a blast and hanging out with Mickey and Cinderella, the cast and a new crew of hundreds of volunteers from town (who never cared before but now show up for the occasion) all come over and demolish the old horrible house. Typically here a video of the demolition is sent to the family in Disneyworld who seem again surprised at something that happens on every episode.

Now the discussion, planning and building of the new house begins. Various cast members come up with brilliant ideas like "Timmy likes racecars" so they build him a wonderful racecar bed which he will outgrow in a year. They all work together, and when it rains or something else happens to perturb them, they watch more inspiring video to remind them of how deserving this family really is, and they have a group hug and resume with more vigor and determination than ever.

Finally, although they fear they may not make their deadline of building a new house in one week (still not sure why it must be done in a week), they work it out and family comes home. A bus blocks the view to the new house, which always makes me wonder who was blocking their eyes when they arrived but before they were lined up behind the bus. They all get very excited, the whole now-caring neighborhood cheers, and the family yells "Move that Bus"! The bus moves, and the family nearly falls to the ground in awe of the new home that stands in place of their crappy one.

They run in to tour it, and editing is very careful to make sure they catch the family members getting emotional over the framed fingerprint of their kid, or the poem that Timmy wrote once that now sits in a special shrine room. Then they can get excited about all the absurdly wonderful fantasy-land rooms that were built with their own distinct personalities and/or disabilities in mind.

Usually by the end it's dark outside, and they roast marshmallows or sing at their new firepit along with with some special guest star who seemingly has nothing to do with anything, like Jessica Alba. But everyone is very, very moved.

The End.

PS: Don't take my sarcastic summary as offense to the wonderful families who genuinely deserve these new homes. As I originally posted, I cry like a baby every time because I feel so truly happy for them. But it kills me that I can be so set up every week and yet still get so surprised and emotional with each episode, lol.

Now, you'll need to watch it for yourself to really feel it!

I know what it's about. I always have wondered how if they couldn't afford a better house in the first place how they go about paying the taxes and probably higher household expenses on their new "dream house". I saw on the news about one of the families who got a great new house and they were losing it because they couldn't afford to pay the taxes. I just doubt that it's all happy ending like they want you to believe.

You are correct in that the irresponsible ones come out after the fact, but not all are in that position. That family you are referring is one that had their mortgage paid for them, and they stupidly refinanced - and then lost it. There are many more that are not reported about that have responsible with their gift, like the big cat sanctuary near me. I really considered it a blessing to be able to witness the good they do and go there a year later and see that they have really cared for their gift.

Oh dear me!!! That gal tonight! "I was young I always dreamed about marrying the prince and living in a castle. Well I got the prince but never thought I would get that castle".

I stopped watching EHM after they came to El Paso and built a beautiful new home for a family whose home never got finished and was trashy because they BOTH QUIT THEIR JOBS to be able to cook food to deliver to Juarez, Mexico. The family that they didn't choose really did deserve it more, they both tried to work as much as possible while taking care of a disabled mother, and child, and care for a sister's kids because she was killed in an accident. In my own opinion, the family they chose could have taken care of their home if they hadn't quit their jobs willingly and let their home go to pieces. I did feel badly in a way though, while all of their belongings were in storage during the taping of the show they were vandalized and most of it ruined. One of my fellow teachers knows the family and she just couldn't believe they were chosen over the other family. But ever since then, I will not watch that show. This was one of the only episodes they had trouble getting volunteers for too.

I'm just greatful the people from clean house have never showed up. I tried mopping in a wheelchair.... no go.

They did a great job on a farm home in Bakersfield,CA. The lady had lost her husband and her kids were helping her run the farm. They designed and built a new watering system for the hay fields the 12 year old son could operate. This was a few years ago, i tried to volunteer but they had tons of people there already.

My fav is the one that I watched this week about the woman in Louisianna. Divorced mom, 3 kids. House had no heat, plumbing was out of commission....no water whatsoever in the home. They would fit grocery bags over the seat of the toilet so after each use they would tie up the bag and replace it with another. I couldnt even imagine.

She ran a Medical Clothing Store out of the livingroom and would give away scrubs to people who needed them to get or keep their jobs. She worked on committees for post-Katrina clean up and rehab and never mentioned that her own house was literally held together with duct tape on one side.

They rebuilt the house and the contractor paid off the mortgage. Mississippi College gave all 3 kids scholarships.

I bawled like a baby!!

I like the show too, but limit my watching it.. I don't like cry fests! Same with Animal Cops, that show does me in ...(actually, that one tends to get me VERY angry)!
