EXTREME NEWBEE from Tennessee

Hi and :welcome from Ohio. So glad you joined us. What kinds of chicks are you getting? I keep mine in the garage as well when they are young. I built and 8' x 2' frame and covered it with hardward cloth. I use the garage wall as one side. I put a layer of shavings on the floor. A snow shovel works great to clean it out. :thumbsup

Thanks for the welcome. Hate to admit this but I have NO IDEA what kind of chicks we are getting. My son wanted to do it and we were all for it. I will let you know as soon as I know something. We are planning on starting our brooder this week sometime. I will post pics as soon as we start

Welcome to the thread from TN.

Which section are you in, middle, east or west?

If you look in the social section of BYC under Where am I? Where are you? you will find several TN threads. All sections of the state have threads. If you are close to any of us in the middle section (I am here), I am sure, not only will we help, but give you tours of our places. Load you up with chicks. Etc, Etc.

I am from middle TN. A small town called New Johnsonville. It is right next to the TN river just as you go into west TN on highway 70. I will check out the TN threads and see if there are others that are close to me. I really need to see some chicken coops before we start building ours.
By the way, I know NOTHING about chickens but I do know I want some of the chickens that you have on your avatar!!!! I think they are really pretty:)

I live outside Lewisburg in Southern Middle. Pop over the the Mid Tn thread and some of us even get together to do lunch, swap, meet up at shows, etc.

Those are my pride and joy. I love silkies!! Don't get me started but I will gladly help you get sucked into the 'silkies are evil' club. HAHAHA

Ok "silkies" are what they are called. Glad to know that cause I had know idea what they were called. These are the kind of chickens my boys want. My 8 year old calls them "the chickens that have hair on their heads" I know for SURE I will have some of these chickens. They are SOOO PRETTY.

We are getting 25 chickens from 4-H and my sons are wanting to raise them for pets and to collect and sell eggs. They say they are going into the "egg business." We eventually want to get an incubator and try our luck at hatching some for ourself. What size chicken coop would you recommend for 25 or more chickens? I want them to have plenty of room.

I was also worried about if we get our 4-H chickens and I get some Silkies (which is GOING TO HAPPEN) do you think our 4-H chickens and our Silkies will get along or will they have to be kept seperate? LIke I said, I am very new to this and am trying to learn all I can BEFORE I get our babies.
