Extreme SW VA, NE TN and Southern WV

I am glad to find this thread, dismayed there aren't recent posts. I've been freaking people out by just stopping to talk chickens when I see some outside. 1 person no doubt thought I was casing his place before I got up the courage to stop:) I would love to find day old mille fleurs and some buff silkies. Currently have excellent rir ladies, a fat and happy rir rooster and 2 bg crosses. Would happily give away the bg crosses in partial trade. Some folks set outside livestock auctions with chicks and chickens before the auction starts but I've never been.

I'm not sure about non-GMO but Big Spring Mill in Elliston is the only mill around that I know of (bsmill.com). Have fed their feed for several years now with no issue, always fresh.

THANK YOU. This is very helpful. I'm not too concerned about GMO because I feed Purina now, almost no getting around it, but I love the idea of local, and they're not far from us! Do you know they're prices? I'm going to call and see about getting some of those 100lb bags

I just found this thread. THANKS for all the posts. I have a small flock in Dinwiddie VA and I'm hoping to add a few more birds in the spring. I prefer to pick up chicks instead of having them shipped so this will be a great help.

Has anyone thought about making up some sort of consolidated list of who has what breeds???

I used to get 100# bags of starter & layer pellets at Giles co farm bureau from bsmill for around $25. Wife picks it up usually now so I'm not sure on exact prices. A local convenience store store has bsmill 25# bags for 7.99 that I got recently in a pinch so I suspect the 100# bags are still around $25.

Anyone know if folks have started chicken swaps in livestock parking lots yet? I'm ready to get in on the chicken scene other than my own home. Want to support local folks too by buying from them. Anybody from this area?

It's like there's only 50 people on BYC who live here

Maybe it's the backyarding ways that scared all the older timers off. I know for a fact that there are chicken people where I live, but I think that they have trouble with the internet...

My closest local swap is at the local Farm Supply in Galax, VA, but they stopped for the winter and I'm not sure when they start up again. It's Saturdays from 8am-12pm or so (not too sure, but I usually try to stop by and see what's being sold every couple of Saturday mornings).

In a few years I'll be a breeder of Easter Eggers and a few others, but I've got to get more coops set up first
