One of my chickens has been getting picked on and then got in infection in both eyes. Some swelling and foam, could see some small blood peck wounds around her eyes. I’ve been treating with colloidal silver spray, saline spray (to flush out debris), and slather of antibiotic ointment (non medicated). She is not getting any better and now it looks like the infection has spread to her waddles? She is also having a little bit of wheezing maybe but it’s hard to tell.

I had another chicken about 3 weeks ago who had the infection in one eye (also getting picked on, also had some peck marks) and the treatment had her cleared up in a little over a week. No other symptoms.

I do have tetrymiacin 0.5% on hand from an eye infection I had last year that I could start applying to her eyes. I read that it’s okay to use on chickens. Anyone confirm that this is a good idea and I should start doing that?

I have also been giving her Flock Shield respiratory aid in her water. Scrambled eggs, yogurt, sauerkraut, and pumpkin seeds all as extra supplemental help. She is separated from the rest of the flock.

Please help!!

Does she have any lesions inside the beak?

It may be Wet Form of Fowl Pox that you are dealing with. I'll tag in @Eggcessive to see if she agrees or has other suggestions.

I'd do what I could to keep the eyes cleaned with saline, then put a dot of ointment in the eye. Take care not to rub or disturb scabs too much since this can cause Fowl Pox to spread.

Fowl Pox is a virus and will usually resolve on its own in several weeks, but the Wet Form can cause complications by closing up the eyes and causing lesions inside the beak. Keep her hydrated and eating a good nutritionally balanced poultry feed.

I do not know why it has worked for my feral cats. I've used a saline solution wash, then have put a dab of castor oil over the infected eye to clear up with only the one application in a few days. I have a feral cat that uses it's claws to pin the other cats head that is trying to eat food causing the puncture injury next to the eye to develope. This is an infection type situation.

I agree with Wyorp Rock that this looks like fowl pox. Mycoplasma is around in many backyard flocks, and can be a secondary infection in the eyes causing swelling and gunk. Clean the eyes 2-3 times a day with saline and apply the Terramycin ointment. Help her to eat a couple of times a day, since she probably cannot see food and water. Making her food water and holding it up to her beak will get more fluids into her. Fowl pox is spread by mosquitoes and lasts about 3-4 weeks.
