Eye Infection

Thank you. I offered some yogurt and he was more than obliged to nibble a bit, and he will drink if I squirt water along his breek line. I think the discharge is decreasing but has migrated to the other eye; which I have started applying medicine to as well. Tomorrow I'll pick up some antibiotics and see if that improves things a bit. All things considered, he still has enough energy to try and bite my toes so all hope is not lost.

It's hard to say about his comfort. If he is in a coop that has good ventilation, but is not directly where the wind will blow on him, then I am inclined to say he should be fine, but, ultimately you are there to see him. Look for any signs that he may be cool - puffed up, fluffed up feathers, etc.

Hello sorry to hear about your bird I would really recommend getting Taylan50 which you can find a tractor supply. I would give him it orally, 1/2cc to 1cc (depending on the size of your bird 1cc for a rather large chicken) a day for 3 to 4 days. And then see how he's doing. I would also suggest getting antibiotic polysporin eye drops(can find at a pharmency such as Walgreens), putting a few drops in each eye of the bird to stop the spreading from one eye to another and to stop the infection.

I really appreciate all the support and advice everyone had been giving me. Great communities to be a part of. So my roster is on VETRX, (3 days) of tarramycin and now (2 days) polysporin, and the eye swelling and puss discharge has subsided 90%. I decided to hold off on using an eye antibiotic tonight and see how it looks tomorrow morning; my fear is that I will over use the antibiotic and cause harm to the eye (s). That being said I am still applying the VETRX regularly. Now the bad part is he's blind as a bat and I have to assist him with eating each meal (but he does have a huge appetite and is staying hydrated). My question is, being that the infection, in my opinions, was rather minor, how long before the vision should return? I know chickens have sensitive eyes but I just hate the thought of my guy not having a normal roster life.

Good news today. My roster has full sight out of one eye and is now eating/drinking on his own. He's even walking around eating grass-snippits. The sick eye still has some clear mucus build up, but the infection seems to have subsided; keeping my fingers crossed for a full recovery.

The sick eye is still a bit runs, fluid is a slightly clear mucus (not puss) that I simply remove periodically throughout the day. Keeping my fingers crossed for a full recovery.

Glad to hear he is improving!
