Any ideas what this may be or how to treat. She is dying, drinking and laying. Just noticed it today.

Are you able to pry the eye open to see what is inside? For example... Does she still have the eye? Is there any pus? In the picture it appears to be swollen under her eye. Is that the case?

If she does not have any other symptoms, my first thought is that maybe she got pecked by another chicken in the eye, or perhaps she was stung by something. I would try rinsing it with some saline solution and she how she does.

My welsummer hen had a similar thing happen earlier this summer and within about 36 hours, she was back to her normal self with both eyes open.

If there are other symptoms, it may indicate something bigger going on, in which case a different course of treatment would be recommended.

Does anyone else have any thoughts?

There looks to be yellow nasal drainage, so I would suspect a chronic respiratory disease causing sinus swelling. Does she have a bad odor that might be a symptom of coryza? MG and coryza are 2 common respiratory diseases that can cause sinus or facial swelling and eye or nasal drainage. Is she sneezing or having noisy breathing? Tylan 50 is used to treat respiratory diseases, and can be used along with sulfadimethoxine or sulmet to treat coryza. Clean the eye with saline if it is draining, and apply terramycin eye ointment twice a day. Here is a link to read about respiratory diseases: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps044

Any chance she is allergic to pine shavings?? I took her out today to my parents farm to quarantine her and she seems to be doing much better. She is eating and running around just like normal. Any thoughts??
