Eye pecking - chicken jail for a 2-day old?! Help!

Hopefully several days will do it. I have little dishes in there for her food and water and it's a pain to keep them clean. Putting her in the partitioned space seems to be a better response than putting her in a separate box and I'm relatively satisfied with that solution. If she's still a problem in a week or so I'll probably put her on the freecycle and get her re-homed. Thanks all for the advice!

Here's a pic of the big brooder with the built-in chicken jail and little "Stripes" doing her time!

She has tons of room.

Is 'Stripes' warm enough back in there?

Oh wow - I had that situation going on last week with my babies. Now I have a blind chick but its eyes look fine!!!!

He/she did it before I even realized what was going on. He/she is fine now.....no more pecking but UGH! but what do I do with the little blind chick???

I think she's warm enough. As you can see in the picture, the heat lamp is right there. I think it's about 90 in her corner, same as where the other chicks are and they seem fine, no piling up or anything. She has staged one jail break, but the shrill peeping cued me to the problem and I was able to lock her back up. I had just cleaned the brooder and I think I didn't get the screen securely back in place.

Yikes! Now I feel doubly glad I jailed the miscreant. If you don't want to cull your blind chick you might search for the thread on Radar the blind chick. It's a long story about someone raising a blind chick. Good luck!

I have already followed all of Radar's chronicles and I don't think this little chick will make it as a Radar.

Is anyone willing to adopt a blind chick from Richmond, VA? Hatched from a blue egg but is the size of a banty thanks to not having sight and will be buff in color. I can get photos.

I dont have the experience others do but....I have had 3 groups of shipped chicks and 2 groups of hatched chicks in the last month.
What I noticed is the eye pecking was worse in the shipped chicks. Also the longer they were in transit the longer this behavior stuck around.

I found some small worms to feed to the shipped chicks. This helped them to center their attention more on the ground for interesting things to peck rather then spots at "eye" level.

Just from watching them I correlated eye pecking at this young age with hunger.

Now with two brooders holding over 50 chicks we have no cannibalistic pecking....yet anyway!!!
