Eye problem help please!

Thank you for all your help!!! This is extremly helpfull, for now and for in the future!....How do i get her to eat since she cant see hardly if any? And she does want to eat. Is it just contagious to chickens, or can our geese, dogs and cats get it? Thanks

Likely, she's contagious to other fowl. I would treat her as such to be sure. Dogs and cats likely can't get it, but there is one illness that they can, though it's not common and then really not as bad to them as it is to birds. WIth dogs, cats, other fowl - it's more about them not spreading the droplets that are on the ground to the places where other chickens can be effected by them - they'll be a 'vector' for spread of the illness. That's why you keep animals (and people) from being around her much - just to be safe.

As for eating, keep the eyes cleaned and treated so hopefully they'll clear up soon. IN the mean time, make wet mashes daily with a probiotic (yogurt if you use Tylan, acidophilis capsules if you don't), some honey for taste, a little water if necessary, and her pellets made into crumbles - or crumbles if she's on that. try adding a little mashed up egg (refrigerate what you don't use for the next few days' use). Put some in her beak and keep it in front of her during the 20 or so minutes you're feeding it. Hopefully it'll give her a daily boost. If my birds have a good appetite for it, i'll put the polyvisol vitamins in there. If not, I do the vitamins separate.

Having parrot formula (the powdered formula for baby parrots) is handy, too, in case her appetite drops as it's very nutrient rich and has its own probiotics in it. (If you buy it and use it, don't make it hot - make it lukewarm - hot is for baby parrots and might burn your bird's crop).

In the mean time, trying to keep her nasal sinuses and the mucus clear is very helpful - that's likely to be as much a hindrance; that's why I recommend the VetRx.

Yes, you can use the ophthalmic ointment and the VetRx at the same time as the VetRx fumes the eye sinuses from the inside (and outside if you put it under the eye). Clean with saline rinse first, wait 10 minutes. Treat with the VetRx at the cleft in the roof of the mouth first, pressing it in to see if you can get it to push pus up through the tear duct. Then clean with saline rinse, wait 10 minutes - then apply the ointment. You can swab under the eye with VetRx while you're doing all the other swabs.

On the Tylan, it's Tylan50 injectable (there are others ... 100, 200, etc but 50 is the one to get). It's at TSC probably in the livestock section, or other feedstores in the cattle section (call before you go so you don't waste a trip).

Tylan50 seems to be the most effective choice for many respiratory illnesses that are bacteria, but not all - but since we don't know exactly what it is, it's the best choice. LS50 is a good one for oral dosage for the whole flock, but you can't use it like a flush like you can Tylan50. And it's a longer treatment period and you can't use plain yogurt for probiotics. So really Tylan just is great stuff. I hope it'll work for you.

How do I use the LS50 on the whole flock? I also have a picture of her but I dont know how to put it up... And again Thank you for all your help!

LS50 is an oral medication, a liquid treatment, so you'd use it in the water. I'm not sure of the dosage off hand.

On the pictures, you have to load them into an online site or something. I use photobucket.com because it's free and easy. You just sign up, and then you have an option to upload photos. You browse your computer and choose the file, it uploads it right onto the same page.

When you cursor over the page, you will see some options pop up - the last of which is IMG and has some writing in a box next to it that looks like
. You copy that text and paste here into where you type. It'll look like what I just wrote, but when you Submit, it'll come out as a picture in the thread (if you do it through photobucket or someone similar - it doesn't work if you just do it off of your computer's files).

Incidentally, Tylan is pretty much more effective and less expensive. (I just bought a vial for 10 dollars that will treat a load of birds for a couple of years).

Aw she's a lovely little girl, too.

Does she smell bad? (If you already answered this, I apologize).

I can see by the way she's holding her beak that she's inflamed and congested. The VetRx would really help that. And I do think Tylan50 flushes will help, too. 'Wouldn't hurt to use a terramycin ointment and flush that eye. She looks like I feel when I have really bad allergies, poor gal.

No she does'nt smell bad or stink in anyway, from what I can tell. Is it as bad as you thought? I'm gona keep on trying the ointments and flushes, how long do you think its gona last ? On the Tylan50 when do I need to use it on my other birds, when they get sick or before, do I have to give them shots or squirt it into their mouths? .... and I've herd it said that you cant give LS50 in the summer is this true, because I have 2 bottles of the stuff and I dont know when to use it. Thanks
