This is one of our new spring chicks. She’s always acted a little strange and has had these - what I think - are strange looking eyes. She often walks with her head down to one side looking close at the ground. She’s managed to eat and grow just fine... is she blind/partially blind? Do chicks eyes regularly look like this? Thanks for any suggestions/thoughts.

well it certainly doesn't look normal.

this is what a normal pullet's eye would look like. The whites of the eyes usually can't be seen.

If she has been acting weird, and doing things such as wheezing, snicking, or sneezing, she could have a respiratory disease leading the pupils to swell. if she has any foaming around the eyes, or her eyes are watering, it could also mean she has some sort of respiratory disease. it's best to take her in to a vet if one is close by. These diseases can be deadly to chicks and other chickens, so if you think this is the case, remove her from the rest of the flock. Good luck, and I hope she gets better! :love

Thank you for your thoughts, I appreciate it. Anything we can do at home to treat respiratory illness? We don’t have a vet nearby.... that treats chickens anyway...

Where did you get your chicks—hatchery, feed store, breeder? She appears to have conjunctivitis (pinkeye) which can be a sign of a respiratory disease, such as MG or mycoplasma. I would either see a vet to get some antibiotics, or give Tylan 50 injectable by mouth. It is a cattle antibiotic, and about the only over the counter treatment for MG. Dosage is 1/4 ml (0.25 ml) per pound give 3 times a day for 5 days.

You will need needles and a few 1 ml syringe, which you can get at a pharmacy if you ask. The needles can be found at feed stores, and they usaully sell 3 ml syringes which you can use as well. Remove the medicine from the vial, then remove the needle and give it orally. In some states, such as CA, it can be hard to get Tylan 50. Online I can recommend some other meds. Here is some reading about MG:
