One of my young peahens, about 3 months old, suddenly has a swollen eye - so swollen that her eye is shut. Can someone please advise how to treat this, I'm new at peacocks. Thanks so much for your help.

Thank you for the helpful article and for your response. I have the Tylan which I've used for my chickens, but I always mix it in the water. I've been a little 'chicken' about injecting them. I guess I should just man-up and do it?

And just anywhere in the breast? I'm not going to hit something important (I know to use the little-bitty needles).

when i gave shots in the breast the fisr time i was nervous, i just looked up the birds anatomy online 1st , then got it ready- it was as ez a pie & the birds never even flinched. Dont go in too far, i always felt for the keel bone & went a little to the left or right & made sure i did the opposite side for the next injection>
tylan is an injectable & it needs to be placed into the muscle to work.

I dont inject my peafowl. Here is another Hopkins article on medicating them orally... same dosage. Some people believe that injecting them breaks down muscle tissue.... and medicating them orally is just easier for me.

If you dont have a second person to hold the bird. I lay them on the floor and literally sit on top of them straddling them. I use Tylan 200 1-2 cc for sinus issues. repeat in 2-3 days.

here are some other medications we can use if Tylan is not on hand.... taken from the UPA Forum.

Yes it may hurt the muscle tissue, Why I would never give in the leg. I give most orally, if i see it early. Shot if it has got to that point where their eye is closed. The shot will work faster, better to risk a little muscle damage than losing the bird. Most case one shot will do.

Thanks Kat, it is better to give it orally. Make sure you get pass the wind pipe.

Sorry I am a little late but mine had the same problem. I believe it is infectious coryza, commonly known as a cold. I gave them the tylan orally and it cleared up in a matter of days.

Hi, a few months ago our hen had a swollen eye, It looked like a cyst,at the same time she was gagging every few minutes. I took her to the vet and it was a swolen gland. She gave me some antibiotics, it took a while but now shes fine. It might take a while for yours to get better.Good luck!
