"Of course." Ruby said and ran out to find some damp moss. She ran back into Fern's burrow with some partly damp moss in her beak. She dropped it right in front of Fern and sat down where she normally does.

The blue egg had zipped, and Fern could see whitish-silver fluff inside, plus a big black eye looking at her. It pushed against its shell, peeping in frustration. She could see the membrane tearing. The shell was about to give.
“Ruby! It’s happening!” She cried.
Her heart had never felt so full.
Eerie had also joined in. She preened Fern’s back, silently cheering the baby on.
Ruby was watching Fern and listening to the peeps.
"Aww! This just brings me back to when I first hatched!" She said excitedly. "What color is it?"
“It looks silvery. Not quite white, not quite gray. I can see a big black eye, too.”
"That's cute!" She said. She looked at Eerie, "So, Eerie, are you ever going to hatch out babies?"
Fern kept the chick tucked under her as it pushed out of the shell. She nuzzled it with her cheek, helping to fluff it up.
