Fern rolled her two eggs around beneath her, breathing heavily. The blue egg was so beautiful, she thought tiredly. Her own cream egg was beautiful too. And there’d be yet another little cream egg to join it soon, if she could just pass this one.

“Okay,” Daffy said to Ruby while still preening herself.Ruby finished preening herself to where she was content. She got bored quickly and Daffy would not be able to help so she wanted to visit her friend. "I'm going to go see Fern, okay?" She asked Daffy although it was a rhetorical question.
"Bye!" Ruby said and then walked out of their burrow. She made her way to Fern's burrow and poked her head inside. "Fern?" She said. "Can I come in? I'm bored."“Okay,” Daffy said to Ruby while still preening herself.
Fern grunted in pain. “Su-sure…” she said, panting. “I’m really having trouble with this egg.”"Bye!" Ruby said and then walked out of their burrow. She made her way to Fern's burrow and poked her head inside. "Fern?" She said. "Can I come in? I'm bored."
Ruby trotted in and tilted her head at her. "Come on. You can do it!" She said randomly. "I already laid my egg this morning. And then Daffy came in and laid hers t-" She started but then stopped. "Oop! There I go again. Talking too much." She laughed.Fern grunted in pain. “Su-sure…” she said, panting. “I’m really having trouble with this egg.”
(Sure.)(So, Fern is gathering a clutch of eggs to hatch. Ruby has hatched eggs, right? She can give fern advice.)
"So, I heard from a little birdie that you were thinking about going broody." She said happily. "How many eggs do you have so far?"Fern turned in circles in her soft nest. She had chosen a perfect burrow. Tiny holes in the dirt walls let a good amount of soft light stream in, and silvery vines covered the back wall. Her nest was made of soft grasses and leaves, lined with her own feathers. The two eggs, different colors, sat nestled next to each other in the center.
