*face mites experts - need your help! See post #19*

i bought my ivermecton pour on at the tractor supply store in the horse cattle area. i saw that people use a syringe and needle to apply the drop.. if you put it on the down it doesn't get to the skin.. the down sucks it up fast.. so they use a needle to get in really close to the bare skin and drip..just hold the needle from the side incase the baby moves it won't get poked.. i had seen the face mites somewhere with horrible pics but i can't find it again.. they eat at the beak and eventually the comb pulls away and there are deep holes in the beak.. gl with your cute little babies..

you can get it on the internet freely but is exspencive and full of chemicals. i think its called scaly face its caused by the same mites that cause scaly legs, i would try using scaly leg on it first, you will have to repeat the treatment every 4-5 days to break the egg cycle of the mites

I had the same problem with a silkie on a nest this fall, but hers was worse then yours when I discovered it. Her eyes were stuck shut and the crustiness covered a good part of her head as well. I felt soooooo awful that I hadn't noticed it, 'though I feed and water twice a day, but she was brooding a nest in a dark corner of their small house. I bathed her thoroughly with Adams Flea and Tick Shampoo (for dogs) and wrapped her in a towel with the shampoo still on for five minutes. I then rinsed her and bathed her with another shampoo, rinsing her a couple more times. This loosened all the crustiness, which mostly came right off (along with almost all of her crest feathers). I blow dried her, then applied 3 drops of Ivermectin on the back of her neck (I keep it on hand). She had only a few spiky feathers left on her crest, but her eyes were bright, the skin looked good once the crust was removed, and she didn't appear to have mites anywhere else.

When I researched it, I found similar information to what you discovered. It didn't really take all that long for her feathers to come back in. I've watched her pretty closely and haven't seen a recurrence, nor did any of the others in that pen have a problem. Of course, I treated them all with the Ivermectin. I think now that you've reminded me of that really unsettling situation, it's probably past time for another round of Ivermectin.

Hope you have as good results with yours as I've had with mine. She looks great now.

I got my Ivermectin at TSC and bought the Iver-On brand for 14.99 for the 250ml bottle. I liked it because I had read a thread on here and it said that not only is it for biting and sucking lice/mites, but it also acts as a wormer too! Good luck, I get itchy just reading about these things! LOL

My nine hens and one roo have mites and lice. I have been fighting for quite some time now. I am going today to TSC to get the ivermectrin. I hope there are directions for how many drops to use and how often. I was also going to get wormer because I have never wormed them. I thought even though I've not seen any worms I might kill two birds with one stone (not the best way to put it, I know)

. From reading this it seems the ivermectrin kills internal parasites as well as the mites and lice. How long after treatment do you wait to consume their eggs? Does the ivermectrin kill all worms or should I go ahead and worm anyway woth a different kind of wormer?

If you do a search on BYC for the Iver-On, there is a very detailed post on the dosage for each weight/size class of birds I looked but my computer is really slow today, the OP is very knowlegable with the dosages, and in my opinion and experience, even though others say not to use it, I have with great success.
I just tried looking for the post again and found it, go to this link and scroll down to #3. Good luck. I would print out the info she mentions as i think it is valuable to have on hand!

So I used the ivermectin pour on on the two silkies, one drop on the skin back of neck. One recovered very quickly (she had already quit the nest & I think the exercise & fresh air helped too). The other's face still looks bad. I retreated her after 4-5 days and it didn't help. She hatched one little chick and I worry about him getting the mites.

2 questions:

How can I treat the chick?

Any other remedies than ivomec? Such as dusting, natural feed supplements, etc?

Thanks!

5-7 drops of injectiable ivemectin orally for full size birds.
3 drops for bantams.
treat face and cuticle with neosporin and polysporin
