Hey! Didn’t know where to post this so I’m going to try here. What would you consider a fair price for 9-10 month old deleware and Easter Egger laying hens? I’ve been paying 25 each for what I have and was going to get 2 deleware hens Tommorow but I wanted to make sure that was somewhat inline. I will say I have got great looking healthy egg laying machines from this person so far. Thanks!

$25-30 is a fair price for a one year old laying hen... ANY breed.

25 if they are going to molt this year (I suspect they will).

30 if they JUST started laying and won't molt until the following year.

Good luck with your new ladies. I wouldn't personally add in ladies that will molt unless I have others already that I know won't... unless I currently needed the extra eggs. I would only add in ladies each year that won't molt the same year I get them.... just to keep production up, not because of any other reason. Of course there is still plenty of time before molt starts this year.

Also, for me personally Deleware were slow to mature and not super great layers... but hatchery stock. I would select another breed. I like variety of eye candy on pasture and being able to tell the hens and their eggs apart makes it easier to tell who might be having issues if they do in the future. Or who is or isn't laying regularly. Plus I feel like a kid when I collect eggs to see what color I get today.

Overall... yes, I think that's a fair price. :pop

It ALL depends on location.
I could find them for half that here. Just saw 10 month old black sex links going for $7 each and they aren't selling very quick.
But I see people out on the west coast paying 4Xs the price for birds then what we do here.

X2! No one around here would pay $25 or $30 for a hen unless it was a rare breed. POL pullets or 1-2 yr old laying hens go for about $10 here (I'm in farm country).

I don’t know how anyone could raise a chick to 9 months old and sell it for 10 bucks! She has Easter Eggers as well so I will probably just get 2 more of them Instead of the Delaware’s. The 2 I have now are laying 5-6 eggs a week each. I like the colored eggs too.

Someone who thought they could make a mint growing out chicks and ended up with a bunch of birds they can't sell...that's who ;)

If you've already paid this person $25 for 9-10 month old birds, you may have set your price precedent. Or you could dicker a bit and offer less, especially if you're buying more than 1- or 2, they'd probably take it. Folks often set prices a bit high so they can come down in price a tad and make the customer happier.

I'd ask about when the birds were hatched, can be hard to tell a 9-10mo from a 12-14mo bird.
