Hi, We moved to Missouri and bought a house out in the country on a small 10 acre hobby farm about two years ago. We’ve always lived in suburban areas near military bases, so this was a huge change for us. My husbands brother lives 10 minutes away and raises cattle, so we’ve been learning how to be farmers from him. When we moved in, we immediately began building our chicken coop. It’s not as fancy as the ones I see on here, but it’s well built, with a concrete floor, 8 foot walls, 4 nesting boxes, and 3 roosts. I’ll upload a photo soon. This house already had a sectioned off Chicken yard. We just had to clear the brush, and put in a new gate. The old chicken coop just wasn’t to our liking, and was pretty beat up. We do use it for storage though.

My first two chickens were a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, and a Jubilee Orpington. They are the matriarchs, and are still going strong. I also have a Lavendar Orpington, and a UI chicken that is red and lays humongous eggs that someone gave me. Then I have four pure bred Ameraucana hens, and one Ameraucana Rooster. My Ameraucanas are black, two blue, and one Wheaton. My Rooster is also black. I also have a light grey Easter Egger, rounding out my flock to ten. I’ve had chickens come and go, but these guys are pretty stable right now. We also have two cattle that we raised as bottle babies, a steer, and a heifer. And we also have a flock of Katahdin sheep that started out with 5 ewes. Last spring we had three lambs, one ewe lamb, and two ram lambs. This winter we had five lambs, 3 females and 2 males, but the one ewe that had twins rejected her first one, and the second one died two days later. The first one I’m bottle feeding now, and she’s doing great. Well, that’s enough about me. Probably too much, lol!

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. Sounds like you have an up and running farm at his point! There are always ups and downs with animals. As state, you should check out the sister sites as well. There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

G’Day from down under Jwpond :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock or other critters, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
