Well they seem to like roosting on the top and "bench" seem pretty happy, it's all contained so I wouldn't think they'd spend much time in it except to lay. Thanks for everyone's help and advice.
The trick that has always worked for me is to light up the inside of the coop. I use a lantern. They will go to the light at dusk on their own. Once everyone is in and roosted I turn the lantern off and the pecking nonsense from the older birds stops.
Here is my process.
After dark place new girls on roost with older ones. That way they wake up together on the new roost
Before dusk on the next night put the lantern on in coop. As the sunlight fades if will become light to them.
Watch for stragglers and shoo them out of any other roosting locations. They should go to the lit up coop
Once everyone roosts, turn off the lantern and leave
