Fake eggs---where would I get such a thing?

Just use an egg shaped rock, leave it in the nest b4 they begin laying and if there are egg eaters, its how I started mine and none of the young ones want to peck their eggs;) The RIR I inherited used to have an egg eater or two but not after the rock...seems to cure them quickly and you still need to collect eggs often if you're trying to retrain.

I keep my eggs i use on easter for my kids. You know those fake colored eggs. I usally only keep the ligh pink ones cause they almost look just like a silkie egg. I steal them with tape or glue and add some sand in them to keep them in the nest. They worked great on my hens.

How about ping pong balls? I looked at some tonight (a 6 pack for $2.99) but I wasn't sure if the black writing on them would make my girls reject them or not.

I'd think ping pong balls aren't much different from the golf balls I've already got in there. I just wanted to give something more "egg like" a try. Now that I see I can pick 'em up at a hobby store, I'm going to go out tomorrow!

Chickens are not very bright. We used to use old light bulbs and door knobs in the nest. My dad used to whittle fake eggs in his spare time.

Try the roll away nest. I scrounged and old cabinet out of the alley. I took the back off and put in a false back raised up about two inches and some nest dividers.

The eggs roll toward the door side of the cabinet and under the false back. I shimmed it to give a slight slant. This cabinet backs up to the coop, door side out. So all I have to do is open the doors and collect the eggs.

Egg eating is caused by crowding and/or nutritional problems. Cure those problems first. Chickens need to eat lots of greens. Weeds and grass are probably lacking in their diet. Don't skimp on the oyster shell. Don't over crowd them. Let them free range all over the back yard.

Yay! I'm going to cracker barrell! My chickens don't eat their eggs, but seem oh so sad when I take all of them away. They'll get one fake egg per nest to cuddle with.
