Actually don't! What I mean to say is the actual space per chicken for coop and run is not the largest, depends on breed. Chickens don't care what their home used to be or is made of. If you take a look at the coop photos on this site you'll see all sorts of special designs. I have 5 chickens that sleep in an old wooden apple crate I built into a coop. I use pallets and apple crates and tree branches to build lots of animal housing or to shelter feed etc... I'm lucky to get all I want free. It works great! Heck, I fill old tires with sand for dustbaths and make my feeders and waterers out of 5 gallon buckets and feed/oil pans. One doesn't have to spend a lot to have happy healthy chickens. I have a lot of fun finding ways to use things I already have or that are free or inexpensive.
I hope you can join the ranks of year round chicken keeper! Those Turkens are gonna be hard to say goodbye to!

Thank you I'm pretty excited about bring able to keep some chickens finally! Im currently bidding on 6+ paint silkie eggs to be my first chicks to live in my new "coop" so I wanted them to be special, now hopefully I win the auction. I agree Cielo, as long as its a safe environment it doesn't matter how it's made or what it's made of. I had a temp spike that I think killed a few of my turkens so I'm not sure how many are left, I'm hoping at least 10+.

I have 70 Tibetan quail due to hatch tomorrow! They are to dark/spotted/small for me to have any clue how many are developing so I have no clue how many to expect & they were in with the partridge chicks that had the low temp part of their incubation so there's a good chance they'll be a day or so late, tomorrow is day 18.

That is a lot of quail! I like the look of the Tibetan... are they called Coturnix? I think they look kinda like footballs. I've thought of keeping them before but I always get scarred by the tales of the females attacking the males and pecking out their eyes. My parents had some that did that and I've heard others talk about it. I'm interested to know how you like them.
I hope all your Turkens hatch. When are they due? Mine are starting to get wing and tail feathers. Chicks look so silly when they are part feather, part fluff!
The quail only take 18 days? Quick!

Boy my temps in the bator where super low last night. I'm guessing cause it was so cold in the house. Hope they level out since I don't want to start adjusting again!!

Thanks! The mama hen is black and the rooster is blue so the babies should be black or blue I find they are mostly blues

Still no luck with the five eggs yet

They hatched on wednesday but im starting to thing that msheets might be right because I bought this hen a week or so before she started laying her eggs and some of them seem to be black and blue but others look different

Any opinions would help
