Fall Hatch! Anybody with me??

Ay ay ay! I am going to have to use lots of "Smilies" to tell this story.

Today is day 10 for my California Grey eggs. I have had 12 of them rockin in my Eco20. This was the first time I candled them. I removed two clears and found one stinker, I had thought there was something a little off in there. When I candled the stinker it was black on the inside! Uh oh, I thought to myself, here it is! It didn't smell too bad, just off a bit. Being a smart lad I decided to take it to the garbage can outside to dispose of... Alas, the hinged lid of the trash can came down on the eggs as I was deciding whether or not to drop them down to the bottom of the can!!!

The rotten egg splashed all over my pants and hand!!!

Gross gross gross gross. Words can not describe the odor and my horror at having it oozing into my skin! I washed washed washed and I still have the uncomfortable feeling that somewhere on me is lurking still the terrible rotten funk

. I threw my pants in the wash, I'm gonna wash them again, I may have to get rid of them. Yuk...

The good news is that some of the eggs are developing.

I think about 6. I lost count. I removed 3 which leaves me with 9... one or two looked like quitters and one looked just confusing, I left them in just in case. So 5 or 6 I'm guessing are developing! I'll candle again before lockdown.

Can I just say again that was a terribly disgusting and traumatic experience. I left the eggs smashed on the yard as I ran away from the grossness. I am not looking forward to animal chores in the morning and walking past the place where what shall henceforth be referred to as "the event" occurred.
May everyone's eggs NEVER go rotten! This is the blessing I leave with you.

that's why I always put my eggs in a ziploc as I'm removing them while I candle. Now I'm very glad I do that.

Really? You candle your eggs while they are inside the bag? That works well? Oh, you have the fancy candler don't you? I'll buy that with my tax return maybe. That would be a good post holiday present to myself I think. Right now I'm using maglights, I screw off the lens so I can tuck the egg in a little and make a seal with my hand. Works... okay. The bag thing seems nice too because it would block potential contamination or pore blockage on the eggs right?

Oh, question for you about eco20 bators. I think you already told me a little about this... This is the first full hatch I've attempted in the eco20. It's a new bator for me, well, every bator is new for me as my Turken hatch in the Hova2362n was my first ever hatch. So... The instructions say to fill one reservoir with water for the first 18 days then both for lockdown. You mentioned something about paper towels? I've found it hard to keep the humidity in the 40s it sometimes wants to dip into the 30s. I'm hoping this isn't a problem. My other bator holds the humidity a little higher much more easily. Do you have recommendations? I live in a desert, by a massive river but a rangelandy sort of place so it's pretty dry. I don't want to dry the potential fluffers out! I had to extricate 4 of my last and too late for one and I think that was humidity related. I've been trying to keep the humidity in the 40s during both my hatches before lockdown.
Thank you for all your help and support!

I must not have said that right. After I candle them and I know their no good I put them in a ziploc. The all I have to do us seal the bag and throw it away. No chance of one cracking open and stinking everthing up. If your having trouble with your humidity then fill both wells up. I know that people will stuff those wells with paper towels and fill them up and lay paper towels on the bottom to wick more water during lockdown.

Your former dog kennel seems great and is plenty of room for a few birds. Consider the factory farmed hens...

Actually don't! What I mean to say is the actual space per chicken for coop and run is not the largest, depends on breed. Chickens don't care what their home used to be or is made of. If you take a look at the coop photos on this site you'll see all sorts of special designs. I have 5 chickens that sleep in an old wooden apple crate I built into a coop. I use pallets and apple crates and tree branches to build lots of animal housing or to shelter feed etc... I'm lucky to get all I want free. It works great! Heck, I fill old tires with sand for dustbaths and make my feeders and waterers out of 5 gallon buckets and feed/oil pans. One doesn't have to spend a lot to have happy healthy chickens. I have a lot of fun finding ways to use things I already have or that are free or inexpensive.
I hope you can join the ranks of year round chicken keeper! Those Turkens are gonna be hard to say goodbye to!

How many of your Turken eggs are still going strong?

Thank you I'm pretty excited about bring able to keep some chickens finally! Im currently bidding on 6+ paint silkie eggs to be my first chicks to live in my new "coop" so I wanted them to be special, now hopefully I win the auction. I agree Cielo, as long as its a safe environment it doesn't matter how it's made or what it's made of. I had a temp spike that I think killed a few of my turkens so I'm not sure how many are left, I'm hoping at least 10+.

I have 70 Tibetan quail due to hatch tomorrow! They are to dark/spotted/small for me to have any clue how many are developing so I have no clue how many to expect & they were in with the partridge chicks that had the low temp part of their incubation so there's a good chance they'll be a day or so late, tomorrow is day 18.

Thanks, Tried with a incubator twice and things went wrong both times so did it the old fashion way with a broody hen and it worked. Good luck to you! I'll keep my fingers crossed
