One hen - 2 year old Comet - started standing off by herself, and not eating. Slept a lot. She actually would move to a different place every now and then, but stayed alone and slept. She would go in at night and get on the roost with the others. One day she perked up and looked good! The next day, she was dead.

About four months later, another Comet did the same thing. It has now been about two months, and a third has done the same thing.

Before we possibly lose another one, does anyone have suggestions as to what is going on and what to do about it?

They get fed lay pellets, kitchen scraps (mostly carrot peelings), and I actually pick grass for them - they LOVE it.

They have a big outdoor yard and a big hen house with good ventilation, and an outside-the-yard, hooked-to-the-fence feeding trough and water trough (rain gutters)

Thus far, the Ameraucanas (sp) have not had whatever it is, nor has the six-year-old Plymouth Barred Rock.

The key symptoms seem to be sleeping and keeping to themselves, and loss of appetite.

Thanks for your help!

Sounds like it could be reproductive issues or cancer even... more common in production breeds. Sorry for your loss. :(

Only way to know for sure is sending the body in for necropsy if it happens again. Some links to help...

Adding your general location to your profile might help others make the most relevant suggestion possible at a glance without first having to ask. ;)

The fact that your other birds are living so long is an indicator you are doing something right. Hang in there! :hugs

Thanks everyone.

The grass is probably three to four inches long. It is whatever grows all around their yard...they've eaten it down to the ground for as far out as they can stretch their necks, year after year, no matter what breed.

Hmmmm...it could be their age, then, as crazy4chickensnducks said..I think they're two ... my husband says three, so we'll compromise. Two and a half.

One hen is showing a little "messiness" at the back end...not pasty butt...just quite messy.

But all I see in the yard and house is brown and white, and green and white poop...some slate gray and white...sometimes it's a bit "loose" and sometimes piled quite high ...

Also recently, come of the comets have been seriously piling up the poop on top of their eggs, in the nesting box...

I tried Bragg's a while back - in their water...and at some point went blank and *stopped* adding it to their water (don't ask me why), so I'll start that again.

So, is this "condition" contagious, do you think? I mean, if it isn't just their age.

I went out a while ago and saw them all around something, looking closely and moving along ... it was a 5 ft long rat snake! An aracauna actually pecked at the snake's tail....heavens to Betsy!

Oh well. At least it wasn't a rattle snake, just a rat snake.

I'm in central Texas - someone asked...
