Here is our situation. I am almost 30, and happily married for almost 9 years. We have three kids and our own small business. We live next door to my wonderful parents. We own our house and almost 20 acres of property that adjoin their over 35 acres. Although we are own our own home and do not technically "live with" my parents, I feel like we have a close knit family setting. We all get along extremely well, and have very open communication. I think that is the key. That being said, I could never live under the same roof as my folks. Thats just me, I like to do things my way and a little space is healthy for us. However, I dont think that your situation is doomed. If YOU ENJOY having them there, and if they are pulling their share in terms of bills, groceries, chores etc, then I think it can work.
