lovin'mychicks :
Okay, although I agree with most of the safety precautions mentioned, it seems as though you feel chickens and children cannot peacefully and safely coexist. I disagree....
The knowledge that my kids have gained from raising the chickens is unmeasurable! I think if the kids have a good healthy dose of respect for the chickens, it can work!
Thanks for that feedback. I appreciate it and you are very astute.
It's not that I feel they cannot coexist. In fact, I think it is a good thing if they do. Rather, it's that I feel that they shouldn't be thrust together- with the expectation that they must get along.
It isnt fair to the chicken or the child.
It is our job to steward our livestock and animals, not ensure we run a tidy petting zoo. If children are to learn respect, then it is we who must teach them.
I say this because the longer you 'roost' around here, the more you will see many people failing to do this. They get chickens, everybody jumps in and then comes the posts full of surprise and bruised feelings, when things go awry.
Again, I'm convinced that our insistent pet-o-fication of animals like chickens is the culprit.
There is a vast gulf between respectful stewardship and friendliness. I simply feel that if we treated them more like chickens and less like teddy bears, things would go smoother for us.
I hope this clears up my position. Thanks again for your excellent response.
