Fan in coop?

I have two fans in my coop. they are caged so no one can get a foot or beak in them....they are not afraid of them, just curious of them when they start up.

I use a box fan in the coop. Next year we are installing a fan either on the wall or ceiling fan. I'd like to run it all night on the hot days.

My coop has a fan in the window that can either blow in or out depending on the temperature in the coop and the wind direction.

The blades are out of reach of the chickens, and on really hot nights, I find one or two of the girls on the roost right in front of it.

It has been punishingly hot this summer -- a couple of weeks ago it was 110 at 6 p.m. and that is really hot for where I live. IT makes the current daytime high of 100 seem almost balmy. The problem was that there wasn't enough air movement to cool the coop off at night. For a while it was nearly 100 at 9 pm, and the girls were miserable. The fan really helps cool it off.

On a slightly different vein, I also insulated the coop/metal building this summer, and it made a terrific difference. That with the fan, and I haven't had any heat-related casulties this summer.

I put a box fan in the people doorway to suck out the hot air. It was meant to make them fee comfortable. What happened was a flock of "chicken" chickens standing out in the hot sun to avoid walking through their pop door past the fan.

I have box fans in my coops. Some of the senior hens roost right in from of it all night. It's just been dreadfully dry and hot here in NW GA. Never had a problem with the chickens being curious about the fans.

I free range, but yes I have box fans in both of my coops (in the windows). The hens do have to come back to the coops to lay their eggs, so one of each of the fans is pointed at the nestboxes.

Be sure and clean the fans regularly (like once a week) to keep them functioning properly and to prevent a fire hazard.

I've been keeping a fan on 24/7 inside my coop for weeks. No problems... hangs near ceiling to pull in air from outside. Also have an outside fan in run that I can use as needed.

I have a built-in greenouse exhaust fan with outside louvres that works on a thermostat. Sucks all the icky air out at 95° and stays on until the temperature drops back down. Keeps the air fresh and circulates it.
