Is "Far Side" a style of comic, or a comic series?

It was a comic series... created by Gary Larson....

There have been several similar comic series since (some that seemed pretty good) ... but ‘The Far Side’ was so original and quirky and even a little twisted for the times... that it just seems unmatched ... at least to me.
