My biggest qualm about Maine is that it has a very short growing season, as pointed out by someone on BYH. This makes me have to buy more hay for any animals that would usually feed on pasture in green months.
 
When I move out, I’m hoping to start off in a small house near the area I’d want a farm, while I do some more planning and saving for a farm, then move to the new house and farm. I’m hoping for at least 50 acres, but it’d be the best if I could get near 100-120. I’m sure that won’t happen though. I’ve Always wanted a barn- maybe just a small one but it’d be the perfect completion of my future farm. I’m hoping to start off with a few fruit trees, about 20 or so ducks, maaaaybe 5 or so geese- all ganders. 4 drakes and 16 hens for ducks, then a few silkies and Cochins (I’m all about that floofy featherness :lol:) and then down the road, maybe after a year or two, get cows (idk what breed yet) and 1 horse for me. I’m planning on already having the farm if I ever marry, then add onto it with my SO and tweak it and stuff.

...btw just making sure, SO means significant other right? Cuz that’d sound weird if it didn’t mean that :lau

:hmmOof that’s gotta be annoying. I’m still doing research on that kinda stuff with MA. Who knows? We might both end up meeting in the middle with our farm plans and end up in NH or VT lol

When I move out I almost definitely won't be on a farm immediately :lol: I'll be in a college dorm or a apartment for a bit, then in an apartment for a looong time. I'd like to at least be in a pet friendly apartment, because then I can have dog, cat, rabbit, etc while still not being able to have a farm. A bonus is that all the animals+the farm dreams will scare off creeps. Nobody wants to have to deal with a bunch of animals just to manipulate a girl.
When I first get my farm, I'm not going to put anything on it immediately- I want to wait for the financial situation to get back to normal before spending a ton on a chicken coop. If there isn't a barn with a couple stalls I can make into a coop, I'd like to get a 20x20 shed off craigslist. A 5x20 portion of it will be a feedroom, and the 15x20 portion will be a coop for standard chickens. Run will probably be roofed near the coop, and just netted everywhere else.
After the coop is fully complete, THEN I'll get the birds.
If the urge to get birds is too strong and I can't wait, then I'll get a couple guineas or peas, something that can free range.
I'll definitely get goats before cows, and sheep before goats. I don't know if I'll ever get a horse- I'm not sure if I could realistically manage it. I go back and forth on it.

Good morning! My pullet named puppy laid a egg a few minutes ago!! I got a puppy dog egg!
