Farm chatter

Alright, let's turn this thing back into FARM chatter. This afternoon I'm going over to my dad's cousin's house to help fix some rafters in their free stall barn.
Forgive me....is there a difference between a free stall barn and a regular barn? What happened to the rafters?

Good luck!!! I'm not too great at math, so it's not my favorite. Biology I like. And English is ok. I've been taking Latin, but I'm pretty bad at it.
I'm in honors math, but not the best in my class. I really enjoy it, though, and I'd like to go into a career that uses math.

Our barn is an old tie stall barn. Each cow has a collar, and is tied/clipped to their stall with gutters behind them that hold the waste. A free stall barn is a bunch of stalls and aisles that the cows have free roam in. Our cows live mostly in the barn during winter, and go out on pasture during the summer. The rafters got rotted out.

Ooooh, ok. So the cows can just go where they wish?
That makes sense! How are you going to replace them without the roof collapsing?

What the....?
