Farm chatter

Yesterday Majesty had two baby goats, that makes 103 on the farm! DSCN9375.JPG

Are there dogs that can help while being respectful of the moo cows?
Honestly cattle are kind of stubborn and sometimes need that extra push or nip or whatever which is why cattle dogs are bred to be tougher. But some do take it a little overboard. But well bred and trained ones know how much force to use when.

It looks scary but it doesn’t hurt them. It’s just to say HEY! Listen to me! LOL but there are headers and heelers. Heelers of course go for the heels and headers sometimes the nose. But usually they only do the rough stuff with big huge stubborn bulls that refuse to move, etc. and can be gentle with calves. They need the grit to work with some of these cows LOL they’re not like sheep that just go. They need to stand up to them and not run away terrified haha

But actually believe it or not, some of the working line Border Collies are worked on cattle instead of sheep. They’re usually short coats though but not always. But they’re bred to be tougher haha

But there’s of course Australian Cattle Dog (Heeler) and I think Australian Shepherds might have been bred to work on cattle too? They’re pretty fluffy haha you’d have to find a working line one though. And there’s also Kelpie (there’s an Australian one and Working Kelpie, I think Australian is show but not sure). There’s also the Koolie but those are more sheep I think. And there’s the Huntaway. And a lot of variants on the Border Collie. Two popular ones are McNab dogs and Hangin’ Tree Cowdogs. They add in other stuff. Hangin Tree is BC, Catahoula, and a little Kelpie. Not sure what McNab is.
