The hen just puffs up like a toasting marshmallow (she sometimes makes a sound like air escaping a tiny hole in a balloon), and then the egg drops with a very succinct thump, and she deflates. And then looks confused, like, "Oh, did I do that?"

ive seen it twice, but from the front/above of the chicken, not the back. and they stand up a bit when they do it
oh, and one of my chickesn watched another chicken do it because she wanted that nesting spot but had to wait
