Farm Day 2014 Photos (mainly of peafowl)

it is until we get hit by a hurricane

Yeah, we get storms here too. Ice storms are the worst, followed by wind and hailstorms. Tornados, floods, drought, locust, wait, that is another story.

The scariest storm I have ever been in? Firestorm. We were in Okieland to pull honey off our hives when a prairie fire made us ready to move the apiary. We saw the smoke as we arrived in Stillwater in the distance, two hours later it became obvious it was making a beeline to the bee yard. We grabbed DWs horse trailer, navigated all the detours, got to the yard and watched the horizon. They got the fire stopped about 3/4 miles before it got to us. Sixteen miles of charred landscape, that was a lot of burnt down homes and businesses.

He is beautiful:love
Greens and silvers only i do not want to have to build a bunch of pens :old

Can't wait to see the silver birds roaming in your place, the most beautiful pictures for silver pied peafowls i have seen were for birds free ranged.

Fires are terrible beast, glad you made it without getting wiped out sorry for the ones that did, i have lost everything to a fire before it takes years before you stop reaching for things that are not there any more

No matter where you live there will be some kind of natural disaster you will have to live with.

My list has grown to 9 greens from 3 different lines and 10 IB silver pieds

with all the whites from my pieds and white eyed pieds i have running around here i should see some silvers hatching in my flocks in a couple years

I will be selling off any extra silver males i end up with from this batch if anyone in my area is intrested, no shipping ,pick up only

Wow Zaz next you are going to be saying you are buying all of his 2015 hatch chicks in every variety.

I agree though. The more silver pieds you have, the better your chances are of getting more silver pieds or getting lots of neat varieties. I think pied and silver pied birds are great for free-ranging since you can recognize who is who from a distance.

What is this going to bring your total peafowl count to?

19 i the count for now, still on the fence about a pair or trio of imported greens

But i am thinking real long and hard on them as i will not be making any more trips to Florida after this , or so i say

of course my Daughter and son in law go there at least once a year just to hang out

I am going to be a nervous wreck leaving my babies for such a long period of time with just the dogs in charge but i know they are good at what they do, i trust them over any human i know to watch out for them
wink.png
they have never let me down when i had to be gone for days at a time with my DH.
Just hoping my pups are going to be big enough and not going threw the plying stage with the birds but Annie (their sister)never gave me a lick of problems when she was a pup and now guards the peas exclusively

No I mean including all of the peafowl you have now, how many would you have once you get the 19 or so peachicks from Rocking BAB? Peafowl math haha.

Well, my plan is someday when I get greens, I would get just the American Greens. I will see if I really like them, which I figure I will, and then after I have had the greens for a while I will see about getting imported greens. I don't want to play trial and error with the more expensive ones. In 2013 I was ready to buy a pair of the imported greens the day of farm day once I saw how pretty they were - I even brought my dog box - but my parents talked some since into me. When I see them I get so excited I forget to think about cost for feed, housing, etc. I just see a pretty bird that I want.

I don't care for going shopping at the mall. I like going bird shopping! Although for me it is more of window shopping...I guess you would call that fence shopping?

When I sold Smarty, a young peacock I had for sale, the buyer's sister was taking her kids down here for a vacation. On their way back they pulled off the interstate into the Cracker-Barrel parking lot to buy Smarty from me to take back. I was nervous about handing him over to people who I figured were not bird people, and the teens looked really annoyed that they had to stop to get a bird and then try and get the box with him inside to fit into their already stuffed van. I was happy though. No one tried to talk me down on my price.

I am sure you could get your Daughter and her Husband to pick up the birds for you, but I personally would want to be there to get them in person especially if he lets you have your pick of the litter. I always go for the tallest birds when I have my pick. I am sure your Daughter knows about birds, but I would be too nervous to have someone else picking up expensive birds for me. Just my opinion.

Your older dogs help discipline the pups though right? I guess if the pups get too rowdy scaring birds, the big dogs will hopefully step in and make them behave.

Oh man, I want some silver pieds in a bad way. My nephew lives in Dallas and my sis friends daughter loves animals and lives in Beaumont. I seen an ad in does Moines, Iowa but that's a 5 to 6 hour drive as well in wrong direction from anything! :)

I saw a listing on Leggs of a Silver cock for $200, KC is not that far from you, maybe two hours?

I could never send my daughter to pick out my birds for me, she likes to look at them and use their feathers but she cares nothing about learning about them, heck she has dogs and knows nothing about them, when they get sick or she needs a dog sitter i am the one she calls
wink.png
i am sure she thinks she has a nut for a Mom the way i love animals more than most people but i am the go to nut in the family when they have a problem
lau.gif

If i need more birds fro Florida , i would have to let you go pick them out for me and let her bring them home
lau.gif

Yes the older dogs will step in but i need to be the one that corrects them, they could be hurt pretty bad or killed if the entire pack jumps on them and that can happen real easily once they go to yappen
barnie.gif
having a pack has it downfalls but the good out weighs the bad by 99%
wink.png

PS I no longer know how many peafowl i have here
hide.gif
but i could tell you if one was missing
