Hi there!

I'm Farm Guy - I was raised on a farm in England, though I've lived in Texas since the 90s. My wife, City Girl, grew up in Colorado, and has never lived on a farm or in the country.

We're small-scale backyard farmers, and we currently have three Rhode Island Reds and two Ameraucanas. They're not just for eggs - we use them also for insect and pest control, and for fertilizing/tilling the soil. We have a well enclosed yard so we let them free-range. We use them as waste processors, and use the land they 'process' for vegetables the following year.

We're also in the odd position that, unlike ALL of our neighbors, we have NO tree shade, so we've been planting some shade trees that should be well on the way to full grown by the time we hit retirement.

We'll both be sharing this account, and are looking forward to joining in.

Well, hello and welcome to BYC from Ohio! Wonderful that you're getting into chickens and sounds like you're enjoying them!

Looking forward to hearing from you and glad you joined!

Welcome to the BYC gang. I'm the city girl here. Hubby was a hunter, fisherman, back-treker from long before we met, married, and built our house 8 miles from town.

I'm the one who plants, preserves, and tends the flock. Great white Bwana hasn't gone hunting, fishing, or hiking since we met. Go figure!

I read all the cowboy books and historical novels about pioneer life while he grew up. I'd still rather clean the coop than ever think of growing up.

You're going to LOVE it here!

Thanks for all the welcomes!

I'm a moderately experienced chicken-keeper, but the farm I grew up on was mixed arable, with a few pigs and chickens. Obviously, in Central Texas, the predators and illnesses etc. are completely different to Bedfordshire, England...

I'm a very handy guy, and with the recent growth in chicken numbers here I need to build a new coop.

The rules in Round Rock are: if the coop is 50+ feet from any neighboring residence, up to 10 chickens. If the coop is 25-50 feet from any neighboring residence, up to 5 chickens.

I'll post some photos soon... :)
