not wanting to hijack the picture thread too much but have to ask....what is the average weight on your hens and roosters? They appear quite a bit larger than many examples I have seen.

I need to reweigh the cockerel as it has been a while and he has grown a lot, but I believe the hens were right below standard weight when I weighed them last. You've given me a good reminder to weigh them all soon. Wyandottes are by no means a small bird, but production strains are tiny. I keep one old production hen in with them as a reminder of what to avoid, and she is easily half their size

Edit to add: standard weight is about 6.5 lbs for hens and 8.5 lbs for cocks. I remember my hens weighing in at 6 lbs when last weighed

Stupid question but how do you weigh a chicken?

No such thing as a stupid question! You can either place them on a scale by themselves if you have a well trained chicken, or hold them and step on a scale then weigh yourself and subtract. I use the second method. For small bantam breeds you will need to weigh them by themselves to get an accurate measurement. If you're someone that prefers not to know your own weight, it can be a painful process!

Thanks for the help! I'll try that! I'm just curious about my own chickens now because I have some really big ones and some rather small ones

Thanks!

I think if you can get your birds to stop smoking, they will put on a lot of weight. It happened to all my ex smoking friends. As for me, I never smoked so just blame my ice cream addiction for what I turned out to be.

Okay, maybe your chickens don't smoke - just trying to be helpful

Sorry for the photo bomb... Just a chick photo shoot and some other adult birds.
