Farmers, guns, and the "old days"

The potential of disaster and legal mess is there, too...some of the 17 yr olds friends as well as this 17 yr old, have drivers' licences and cars! If drunk and an accident happened, this family was the ones that had provided access to the alcohol! Even just other kids parents discovering their kids were freely getting alcohol there could lead to legal trouble, providing alcohol to minors! Since this family is of my own family, there's not much I can say at this point...I only know this happened because I was there when they discovered it....and I've voiced my concern about that very situation there before, all that alcohol not locked up.....well, after a moment of all 3 of of standing there, staring dumbfounded at the wiped out liquer bottles, I just quietly turned and walked away,,,,said NOTHING, lol!

Sounds like you're going thru some rough stuff ~ get some or some more chickens. Just spending time sitting on a bucket watching and listening to them is such great therapy! Ya know what 'they' say - laughing if good for your health and chickens will make you laugh whether you want to or not!

Lol...I actually get a lot of enjoyment out of my "Chicken Little", my rescured "bird cage bantam" in my avatar...I've raised many, eggs and meant, during a 30_ yr homestead life, but years back. Disabled, dont get around well now....thinking about some banties, but will have to be set up so I can care for them esily.Rough stuff? No, not really...just life's normal ups and downs and rolls, etc.

People and kids are the same as they have always been. there are other circumstances at play here. Mothers often working (not at home) to help watch, fathers traveling away or longer to get to work and back. There were ooutlaws then as there are now, just more of them. There were newspapers then and later telegraphs and then phones, none as pervasive or as rapidly informative as now. We didn't hear about things in the next state or city unless they were really abhorent. Nothing is perfect, nor will ever be. Nothing is totally bad, nor will ever be. There are 6 billion + people on the earth now so there's more to hear about. So, just like in the past, all we can do is our best and live with it.

Yep.

Well all ~ here's a good one for you! I just went out to my "chicken house" (small part of old barn fixed up for chickens to be as safe as I can get them) to check how much repair work to do before spring batch of chicks arrive and got the poop scared out of me! About a 12-15 pound raccoon sleeping in a corner. He lifted his head as I came closer so I ran out... well he's now with his relatives in coon heaven, but this is February in Minnesota - nasty and cold! Raccoons are supposed to hiding and sleeping somewhere other than at my feet! Guess I have more work to do to keep my 'girls' safe.

P.S. Do any of you ever clean and eat these critters like they show on TV ???

Kids are not the same. When I was a child and daddy or mama said no, that is exactly what was meant. My sisters and brother knew it and didn't questions it. I was not allow to go in anybody home it a parent was not home. I didn't. The trouble is not the children, it the parents way of teaching what to do or not do, or non teaching. Now days every time you hear a parent tell a child what to do, the next thing out of the parents mouth is, OKaaaay? It sound like parents are asking permission. Asking a child if it's ok to tell you what to do. Just crazy. No wonder you have to worry about guns and children, I wouldn't trust them in my house either. I can get my hands on a gun in just about every room in my house. And no, I won't change that. You never know when a predator will try to sneak in the door.

You folks that live where you have no crime, bless you. A lot of us do and are pretty much stuck.

Well, we've covered a few different definitions of "predators"... besides Minks, Weasels, Raccoons, Coyotes, the safety of our children, etc., we also fear lots 'o stuff out here in the boonies. It's a sad thing when we cannot take care of our own, yet the gov't. takes care of others with our dollars. BUT, can't and shouldn't get into that on a fun and interesting forum about much more pleasant issues... I'll be sick...

Crime is everywhere. Maybe worse some places, than other, but everywhere. And it always has been. There's more people and better news coverage, but the actual rates per captia have actually declined for most crimes. Even in my own rural/small town area, yes, there's lots of crime, though if one doesn't bother checking local police reports, you never hear about a lot of it. But I've determined long time ago i am NOT going to live in fear, let fear rule my life. That's just all there is to it. Take resonable precautions, security, but not feel I've got to pack a concealed weapon everywhere or keep a loaded gun within reach at all times..I mean that for people protection, ot ready for predators if appropriate. I try to live at peace with others, and stay out of places trouble tends to blow up.
As for children, parents....I'm 63 and yeah its easy to fall into thinking kids were better in the old days, back when I was a kid, but some honest thought and remembering, no, that isn't true. There are well raised, respectful children today, too. And back then, no, I knew even as a kids a lot of other children, maybe even most, were NOT being raised like me, or like you say you were old rooster. I remember all kinds of kids and all kinds of paretns, even when I was a kid. I realized as I got older that's why my parents so rarely let me go play with other kids at their homes, what kids we were allowed to play with came to out home mostly. And I was that way with my kids....that way I knew where they really were. I saw it as a kid, and learned it fast with my own, let them go down the block to play at one kid's house, and that parent doesn't watch and keep check, and next you know both of them are off somewhere else. And I do remember some 'bad' kids when I was a kid! And kids that were let run to whatever they wanted to do, wherever, be disrespectful to adults, etc.. So its not just a matter of those were the good old days and these are the not so good nowadays.,

I know there is a lot of crime in my County, We don't release 95 % of it to the public, unless they foil it, we used to post it int he paper all of the time in a police blotter but that stopped many years ago.

Willbit, maybe you should read my entire post, rather than just reacting like a typical knee jerk conservative. I specifically explained how I believe you have a right to own your guns. I don't want to take them away. I have an enormous amount of respect for the men and women who risk or have lost their lives to protect my freedoms, from the military to law enforcement. You are doing yourself an intellectual injustice by assuming liberals don't have that appreciation.
I don't like guns, so I won't own any. I don't care for the business practices of Wallmart, so I don't shop there. It's that simple.

Fair enough. I choose to be able to defend myself from those banditos and mountain lions, though. Where I live, response by law enforcement or animal control can be measured in hours or days rather than minutes. Being unprepared is irresponsible IMHO.

For what its worth, I share your opinion of Wal Mart.
