Farmer's Market?

I'd be far more worried about the pesticide residues on your fruit & vegetables from a grocery store than anything someone's dog could do to your food. ><

Our CSA farm doesn't allow shareholders to bring their dogs onto the property because the farm manager says they cause too much damage.

When my kids were younger no dogs where allowed at pickup for the afterschool program because of allergies, scared kids and unruly dogs.

I've never witnessed any incidents at either place, but both places have been firm on those rules.

I agree if it is totally a food market, and there are prepared foods there, or being prepared. Our farmers market here is mostly crafts and woodworking, canned good, jams and then fruits and vegies in that order. Sometimes there is baked goods there if you arrive early. Everything prepared is packaged, the vegies and fruit need washing yet, and half to a third of the vendors have their dogs with them.

If that's your farmers market then I suggest it's a very good place to take your dog and work obedience with all those distractions and to socialize the dog. If your farmers market is a place people prepare food and eat it I suggest you treat it like a restaurant and leave your dog in the car, or at home.

Regardless of where you take your dog if he lifts his leg and pees on something (other than a fire hydrant, or signpost) I figure you should pay for it. I don't let my dogs pee on trees even as some of them (like transplants) don't do well with it. Dogs can be good citizens too if their owner guides them to be.

We have owned a number of different canines and felines in the past and still do. We set boundaries and trained them to be good citizens in our household and more importantly when out in public. They were and are our companians, babysitters, farm guard animals, herding and guard dogs of our sheep, and hunting companions. We loved them dearly. Any infraction or misconduct results in instant correction of the offending deed. Then there is my wife's uncle and his wife. They are childless and for all ends and purposes she has a loose skrew or two. They have 7 dogs of undescript parentage that are extreamely unrully, dog hair all over the furniture, crap on the floor of their home and it stinks to high heaven. But they are her "children" and can do no wrong. At meal time she even allows them to jump onto their dinning table and eat out of her own plate, crap covered feet and all. YUCK !!! One of our friends and her then 6 year old daughter whent grocery shopping 3 years ago. As they passed this lady in an isleway , the little dog that she was carreying snapped and bit that daughter in the face without any warning. The lady says to the mother ... my little poookey is very protective of me, aren't you pookey and kisses it on it's nose. That little girl still has a scar on her face. Then there are the people down the street that allow their Rottweiler and 2 other of their mongrels to run loose and last year they mauled a neighbor's boy in the boy's front yard. When confronted by the authorities, they said our dogs will not hurt anyone, the boy must have provoked someone elses' dogs. Today, there are too many Looney toones such as these running around rampant in our society. Noone can trust ones own safety in the pesence of any dog that you come upon anymore due to their owners lack of respect for others. Were we currently live in the Central Valley of Cal., there was a huge influx of SE Asian population after a shooting conflict there. The local Animal Control noticed a sudden drop of stray canines and felines. Then they discovered that those species were a fine dinner fare to these immigrants. The meat was sold in their markets at all times after all, and their culture even raised them as livestock. After their leadership was informed that the majority local population considered these four legged creatures as pets, most of them then stopped helping themselves to the ready supply of the delicasy. Some still do, however. Different cultures , different attitudes.

My wife worked for one of the largest agricultural chemical companies at a research and development testing farm for over 32 years. The safety and fail safe measures of many double blind studies are done by PhD employees, Researchers at Universities, and independant laboratories over many years and Millions of dollars before it ever reaches the market. We have friends at the USDA and Universities for similar time periods that are constantly monitoring the safety of these chemicals prior to and after being released into the market. Many chemicals have a limited efectiveness activty, from contact with other surfaces, hours of expoxure to air, or other elements. Many will affect only certain types of vegetation or pests but perfectly safe for others. Our most abundant natural chemical compound on our planet, H2O ...Water is known as a universal solvent. It will kill you if you drink too much of it. What it may carry may kill you too. You can also drown in it. I am more conserned what comes out of some of the back yards of good and well intentioned individuals that fail to read and understand the labels and the safety precautions given on any household, yard, garden or agricultural product that they use in the course of daily activity.

I respectfully, but whoeheartedly, disagree. Charles Benbrook, PhD, I include amongst the people who's opinion I value deeply. I sell very much meat to his sister who is a fantastic customer.

I recall reading this article recently in the PI:

http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/349263_pesticide30.html

It's very difficult for me to not believe residues have a role in our explosive rate of autism, alzheimers and other 'diseases' which have no explanation.

Like I've said many times to my customers, "I appreciate you buying antibiotic free meats from us, however there is nothign I can put in an animal which is more harmful to you than you eating a pint of raspberries from a traditional grocery store." I firmly believe this.

There is a chemical that is in daily use in most households, farms, and commercial enterprises. Collectively, it is used by the truckload. Most don't even bother to read and understand then follow it's directions for use. Some think that a little bit works, more will do a better job. What dangers lurk due to it's use is anyone's guess beyond what is printed on the label after it's original us.. WARNING: IRRITANT. May cause severe skin and eye irritation or chemical burns to skin. Causes eye damage. Wear safety glasses and rubber gloves when handling this product. Wash after handling. Avoid breathing vapors. Vacate poorly ventilated areas as soon as possible. Do not return until strong vapors have dissipated. PHYSICAL AND CHEMICAL HAZARDS: Strong oxidiser. Flush drains before and after use. DO NOT use or mix with other household chemicals, such as toilet bowl cleaners, rust removers, acid or ammonia cleaning products. To do so will release hazardous gases. Etc. Should we ban the use of this chemical? Hint: Chemical Ali , in Saddam's employ, used a combination of this chemical with another chemical to kill thousands of his own people.

It's bleach, and it's irrelevant to the organophosphate debate. These are pesticides which are ingested and remain present in your urine and body tissues. No one knows what safe levels are, and even after halving teh allowed residue in fruits/vegetables, many argue there is no science at all to prove they are safe. It's shocking that your typical flat of strawberries will contain residues of up to 11 separate pesticdes. These become part of you when you ingest them.

According to research studies and reports that one can read when one does a Google search for: Chemical contaminants= 1,290,000 articles. chemical contaminants in air= 380,000. chemical contaminants in food=898,000. chemical contaminans in water= 829,000 . chemical contaminants in drinking water=529,000. chemical contaminants in urban soils= 133,000. chemical contaminants in public lands soils= 153,000. chemical contaminants in farmland soils= 24,100. organophosphate contaminants in farm land soils=2. organophosphate contaminants in air=5. If we were to believe this, how can anyone produce any product that does NOT contain some chemical contaminant?
