Farming and Homesteading Heritage Poultry

That is what I really hope for in the future. Something other than my breeders to hatch breeders eggs. I'll adjust the number under her with what I want to hatch.

DId you finish the coop yet??

Technical answer NO :( Need to put in one more window, take out my temp/tacked in monitor windows and get lighter strip in there I can open and shut.

Had to make a quick tracker/grow out spot for my 4 Heritage RIR Kittle line chicks. Pretty sure only one of the four are pullet. So will have three cockerels to process or sell in the fall.

Two Nelson, two black austrolope and one white rock hatched this time from the Nelson eggs (guess they weren't all Nelsons ) I gave him to hatch for me.

He took home my incubator and checked it out for me. Temp was too low so he got me a digital better grade guage to use! Getting it back Wednesday morning. Will hatch out some green eggs I traded off my light brahmas for from here as practice myself. That way I can cull all the non breeder brown layers and eat the green eggs from the new pullets. I'll then have only the RIR when I gather hatching eggs... duh!

Ok I made a pie since Dr said no fried foods for three days. Had to bread and bake my chicken pieces. Still good.

Remember to reinocluate your gut with a really good probiotic-- like probaclac( Walmart) as it has FAR more CFU ( colony forming units) and are worth taking all the time anyways. I cannot digest breads with out these capsules.

I like the green eggers to-- I putin 16 brown eggs covered by a blue Ameraucana rooster; still need to set up a pen for olive eggs. Only get about 2 of those a day. Would really like more.

As long as the coop is functional you have all summer to change out the window situation. DH thru together another woods style, or half of it over 3 days for the buckeyes. THey are now out there under a big pine and big something else -tree. Still need to put on the addition.ALsways something . . . lol

Making shakes with Lifeway Lowfat Kefir Probiotic smoothies. Have plain unsweetened but I'm adding fruits and a tad of honey. Just like the chickens like it! Haha

So much so they knocked it out of my hand sitting out there watching the babies.... didn't see the Adult attack on the glass coming!! A little thinner than sour cream but they didn't care. Snots. ;)

rofl

I'm sure I would like it that way too. I make homemade yogurt these days and it is not the same as store bought-- better!

My grans mother always drank a small glass of buttermilk---I"ve wondered what goodies are hidden THAT. This was back in the late60's. I bet it was not pastureized . . .

We drink buttermilk here....love it! My mother had a nasty ulcer filled with an overgrowth of H. pylori and was supposed to take two different broad spectrum antibiotics for two weeks along with GERD medicine but I had her drink buttermilk every day instead and it went away on its own. They retested her and it was gone. Now she is sure to drink her buttermilk frequently to maintain good bowel health.

Bee, do you make your own, or buy it?? I'm guessing you make it-- goat, or cows milk??

I keep and use the buttermilk that is leftover from when I make butter from whipping cream.

THis begs the question-- why make your own butter from whipping cream when you can buy butter  by the pound, wrapped in quarters already? ANd a second question-- do you innoculate the "leftovers" to get it started??

Yuk. I can't figure out why anyone would ever eat store bought butter. The awful things those cows eat scare the crap out of me. I wouldn't feed it to my dog.
I use our sheep's milk to make cheese and our cows milk for all other things - including butter. Wouldn't use goats milk, but that's just me. I make all of our butter for the entire year in the spring when the grass is lush and sweet. I roll it into quarter lb balls and freeze it for the year. We always have buttermilk on hand for baking so... qed
