I am a civil war reenactor and have questions about fatbacks.
Many times, during the weekend, we get busloads of kids on a search hunt for items to be found in camps. One of the items on the list is fatback.
I would love to get the real thing but I am afraid during the warm weather, it would get rancid and bring in flies. Not sure if salt pork can be even better.
So can it be dried? I am planning to use fatback as a display, not for eating at all. If not, is there a plastic mold toy mold mix I can use to make a "fake" fatback?
How would one do the mold? It would be easy to mix with water, pour the mix into the bowl or container with the fatback in it and wait for it to dry and then peel off, presto, very own fatback we can use repeatly.
Its a fun thing but unfortunately fatback is on their list of hunting down items. We do have hardtack crackers!
