I’ve heard this but I keep chickens for breeding, meat, eggs and although some are pets I still need them to have a purpose. Selling mixes = $3 a chick Selling show quality pures = $20+

That IS true, but there are three main reasons to buy chickens: meat, show, and eggs. Obviously you would want a purebred for show, and most likely meat (I don't have a lot of experience with that) but for eggs, most people just want an even-tempered good layer. A purebred isn't always the best choice for this. Thinking from the buyers perspective, mixes are best for layers. I also know that blue-egg layers are popular, of which purebreds can often be tempermental (take the Araucana for example.)

Purely out of curiosity- is the ameraucana breed REALLY purebred? Because weren't Auracana's mixed with other breeds to create it? I mean, Araucanas are known for having no coccyx, but ameraucanas are descendents from them. What goes into ameraucanas? And if they are purebred because both of their parents were ameraucanas, then couldn't you say EEs were purebred because both of their parents were EEs?

EEs are not an APA recognized breed, they are a mix of different breeds with one parent carrying a blue egg-laying gene.

Ameraucana large fowl are in the APA “All Other Standard Breeds” (AOSB) class of chickens. They were admitted to the Standard in 1984.

Although all my Ameraucanas did end up being roosters, so I no longer have them. Ameraucanas are one of the sweetest breeds I have dealt with. They weren't quite as sweet as my cochins, but they were so sweet. They are my all time favorite breed. I do prefer Ameraucanas to Easter Eggers.

The Ameraucana is an APA recongnized breed. They breed true. There is also a very specific set of features that they must have.

No. EEs are a mix of ANYTHING, they just need to have a parent with at least one blue egg gene. A mix of an Ameraucana x Maran crossed with a CCLB x Cochin isn't going to produce a purebred chicken even though both parents were EEs. Yes the offspring would be an Easter Egger just like the parents but it's not a purebred by any means.

Almost all purebreds were bred with something else to make them. Gamefowl are a breed that don’t get eaten by predators as easy, they don’t kill themselves laying eggs, they’re not too fat to fly and they do good in the wild. They are purebreds but they live longer and much better lives than those other chickens that have been bred so much that they can’t even live without humans to care for them
