Cloverleaf, I have mine all mixed in with the flock right now. I do plan on selling off or rehomeing all but one of each breed that I have. If things pan out to what it looks like, we should have 3 boys in a mixed flock of 20 birds total. My current bird status is on my profile, but we have 8 roos in 28 birds total right now. Will they all get along (for the most part) if I just leave them as is until I can clear out the extras? Or is there a certain stage when the roos become overwhelmed with testastarone and feel the need to try to kill each other with that many around?

Thanks, nice talking with you. Got to go check my neighbors farm. They are on vacation and have hired my kids to dog, cat, chicken, turkey, quail, chucker, and pheasant sit. Lots of water to be poured!

It's good to have neighbors you can count on!

- I swap out "animal care" with my neighbors when possible, good people!

I always grow boys up together, so I have the option of having 2 boys in one pen at any given time if I choose too. That being said, once they've been separated, I never put boys back together, because then all bets are off.
I had a 2 cockerels together a few years ago, and the subordinate male (also a bit younger) NEVER crowed, and actually didn't develop his comb until after the dominant male was removed from that pen.

Poor guy, must've been very intimidated! Seems he was completely emasculated

- I'm keeping my boys together as long as possible... I have a couple of smaller pens I can divide them up if needed.

Yes, it's possible that hatchery birds may be clean faced, or possibly less "well endowed" than other birds. But if you've had them since they were very young (a few days old) and they had face fluff then, they will get it back after their ugly phase. IF they were clean faced as chicks, they will be clean faced as adults.

There's hope for my kids

I looked at them last night and I can see little pins sticking out!

One SF/LavOrp cross roo I got from PiperOmar doesn't seem to be developing any face fluff, he's about 13-14 weeks old. Does this mean he'll stay "clean shaven?"

Wow, this is great! Thank you for taking the time to do this!

I have one other question on the feet. When the bird is standing should the forth toe touch the ground or is it up in on the leg a bit? Looks from these picture like it is up on the leg a bit. I really appreciate you time with this!
Quote: It should be up just a little bit, just like a 4-toed bird. :) Size is something I've really focused on with my birds. ;)

They should have their own pecking order like the girls, but there will always be a bit more sparring with boys. You never know what they will do for sure, it's up to the individuals. :)

Quote: When you said you had a SF / Lav Orp, I wondered if you got them from Laurel. :) I finally got to see her birds last weekend in person.

He will probably stay clean faced.

Ok...so I am new to Favs. I have a pair of SF from Cloverleaf, about 13 weeks. By the way CL they are huge!
I also hatched out 6 babies almost 2 weeks ago from CL. All 6 that made it to lockdown hatched!

As the feathers come in, what do I look for to tell the difference between pullets and cockerels?
Cloverleaf, I know you told me, but I forgot! Lol!
Just curious, I like watching them feather out and knowing what to look for.

Thanks!

I usually wait until their shoulder feathers start coming in, salmon / brown will be pullets, black will be cockerels. Also, if you start seeing black leg feathering that'll be a giveaway on the boys. ;)
