LOL Mary...I usually live on a soapbox.

You guys are right, and I did think about the breeding aspect. I guess it was just wishful thinking that I could sell the pullets as layers and the boys as meat birds and be done with the nasty business....

Ok, so now we're back to learning to cull at the 'bator

i cant bring myself to cull at the bat or... i have all my breeders and pullets and birds i am keeping penned up... and when i know a rooster is a cull i tern him loose to free range... i loose a few to the critters but i figure that is better than loosing my good birds... i feed them the cheapest feed i can get and then butcher them when they get big enough... the only down side is the poop on my front step lol... and the 75 roosters i have running around...

What about caponizing unwanted birds before giving them away as pets? I don't like the thought of the procedure, but they would get to live. I really don't know that much about it, could that be another option though?

If your alright with the blood/ surgery involved in caponizing you should be albe to handle processing birds. That is just my opinion. I have thought of caponizing before but its a skill that requires practice and if you do it wrong you can injure the bird. I would be caponizing to produce more tender faster growing meat birds. I eventually may try it.

I've read a little about it in the past. I think it's something of an art form. It used to be a very popular procedure, but these days not many people do it. I think people used to believe it produced bigger, tender birds, but I think I read that it just makes them gain fat?

Nowadays, there are too many broiler types available....

I totally understand what the others are saying though, if I'm gonna breed these birds, I should be willing to do what's right for the breed and respect the time, money and heartache others have poured into this work.
