yeah, i noticed his toe was crooked and i'm splinting it to see if this might help correct it.

i thought i heard you shouldn't breed them with that since it could be passed down. is that correct?

Have you done any hatching from the Pontius favs yet? They throw white recessives. I've got a bunch now.

Pam did indeed make the run from TX to IL to get those chickens... and brought me home some

! My DH calls her the crazy travelin' chicken lady. She is a sweetie and is as real a person as you will ever meet... with a genuine desire to see her breeds do well. If you get a chance to do business with her you will not be disappointed.

And girl , those birds look like they are comming along to be everything you hoped for.

Yep thats true as I said before none of the birds here have crooked toes but it can be passed on and its to big a risk to breed them it also could be an injury from hatching or incubation or something like that but its something you defently don't want to pass down.

Henry, i checked the remaining eggs in the bator and found 2 had pipped in the wrong spot and upside down. one was really large and i think got stuck before getting turned around to the air cell before trying to pip through the shell wall. so if i didn't have that happen i would have a 75% hatch rate. the last 2 out of 8 look like they quit somewhere towards the end.

the last 2 McCallum eggs didn't continue to grow either so i am a little disappointed that they didn't do good at all. but that might be because they used FedEx instead of the PO to ship them to me and the box wasn't marked very clearly. they all seemed to have floating air cells except the last 2 and those ended up with huge air cells when i last candled them before taking them out of the turner.

i wish one of my other hens had gone broody in time to put eggs under her. now i have 2 more in the coop showing signs this past week.

Order of things I cull for...

On hatch day- incorrect toe placement (hardly ever see in the Favs now but my BC Marans have toe issues). This is also where a bird without beard or muffs would go.

Week 2-4 when I can sex- cockerels with more than a five pointed comb (magnifing glass) and any cockerel who is not large and hardy and properly shaped.

Week 8-10 incorrect color feathers in beards or chests or other obvious feather color issues, Light weights or incorrect build.

Week 16 spots in hackels, incorrect tail set, failure to get nice triangular white wing tips in cockerels, etc. Failure to attain desired adult size or to be oversized.

These are just a few things I can think of off the top of my head....There have been fewer and fewer birds that need to be culled over the years... I am still always looking for ways to do a better job of this so I would like to ask, if I may...

What do you cull for and when?

So what do you cull for and when?

I haven't really had the opertunity to cull any birds yet as I haven't been hatching much and what I have hatched I have sold off already because I am adding new blood. I am going to make my culling decisions from what I read on Peter Merlins Faverolles site which has a great article about culling faverolles. It pasically completly agrees with what you are saying.

Things I will be looking for when I hatch:
5th toe placment
Combs in both cockerels and pullets! ( lots of pullets with to many comb points!)
Black ticking on any feathers in the pullets
Small chicks
Rust coloring in the blue salmons beards

Those are also just a few hopefully as I go along with this project I will figure things out. I would agree not to use the chick for breeding and to sell him off.
