Faverolles Thread

I am fairly new to this thread so apologies if this has been discussed before. As Mama Hen I got a little worried this week about scaly leg mites with my flock. I know what they look like generally but I was wondering if they look different with those that have leg feathers or if they are more prevalent in the birds who have leg feathers. The reason I ask is that I was looking at my SF's legs and there are a few scales that are raised but it looks like maybe new feathers are coming in there? She's about 15 weeks old. Thank you!

I am hoping to start hatching chicks as soon as I get them! :)

I have a mama hen! This is just too fun. Sharing pictures as she sat on the eggs..and then after they hatched. She is such a good mama. She's a bantam Faverolle. Here she is sitting patiently.

Here she is being mama hen. She is good with them. In the picture below, there is
a baby peeking out from under her chest. Cute! I haven't had the opportunity to watch
this in a few years..so, I'm having fun. :)

I picked her up, and all 7 babies popped out. She started clucking at them like she was
saying, hey, get back in here right now! They are just mixes except for the white. It is
a pure RIW. Will get bigger than mom for sure. I have some LF Faverolle eggs in a bator
now, since I've seen what a great girl she's been. And, she laid 4 weeks straight! Didn't miss
a day. I thought, I want a LF that lays like that! She had been laying for a couple of months
already, then she did the 4 week straight thing, then went broody. Great layer. Hope
she gets back to that and doesn't go broody as often as the silkies! Had those in the
past.

How sweet

I like that chick peeking out from her wing! It's a real joy to watch a momma hen and her chicks, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Sunday, I actually got to see a chick hatch - in the coop. Momma had 2 chicks off the nest and she sat and watched as the 3rd one pipped and broke through, then she started eating the shell and finally rolled the new chick up under her - simply awesome! Congratulations on your little family!

Hi there!

I may not be much help, but I haven't had any issues with leg mites. However, sometimes the boys, never the girls, will pick at their leg feathers enough to cause a little spotting. I usually get out the poultry powder and powder their legs really good to make sure it isn't bugs..... My French Marans hens will pick at their leg feathers a little, still no sign of bugs...

Is there a reason you think it might be mites? 15 weeks sounds like the right age to be having irritation caused by feathers coming in.......

Thanks for the reply! No reason in particular - just noticing feathers poking through and that causing slightly raised scales. Don't want something to get out of hand!
