Faverolles Thread

At what age can you start sexing the SF?
I think this is going to depend on where they came from. Hatchery birds are often off-colored and can take some time to sex. Breeder birds can be easier but it depends on who they came from and how familiar you are with the birds.

These are our first hatches. The parents came from two different breeders. Hen was shown. Roo we got as a chick.

Also as they begin to feather the girls *usually* will begin to have an upright tail, boys none to low set and thicker legs and look like little balls where girls will be more inquisitive and upright.

My chicks are just two weeks, and while I have some good guesses as to sex, I wouldn't bet money on it. Got all excited because they all feathered out light, but Just last night I noticed some dark feathers peeking out on some feet. I usually don't feel sure until four weeks.

I don't mind the wait, as other breeds have to wait sometimes until someone starts crowing to be sure! We're pretty lucky with this breed!

Well, based on everyone's input I'm going to take a guess. We'll see how good I am at it in a couple of weeks! I think we have 3 boys, 1 girl & one that I really hope is a girl, but may be a boy.....

You are right about being lucky with these guys. We have one Serama that we are still waiting for to commit. S/He's months old.....

Here is one of my salmon faverolles! I love this breed. Just learned this is the breed I have not golden sex links. But I am happy with this breed over all. I was second guessing Sex links due to high risk for health problems. My girls are so sweet. They will hang out sometimes on my lap or walk up for a quick pet under the beak. They are very pretty too. I love their beards and their fluffy butts!! Lol

I am happy you are enjoying your girls! They are such a sweet breed of chicken it is hard not to like them.

I just moved my juvies to the "new coop" out of the grow out pen. The mid-sized juvies live there with a breeding pair of silver-laced Wyandottes and my pet Holland lops (two brothers). They all get along great! I have a couple of juvies that just aren't thriving. I had a respiratory sickness going around and I think that set some of them back. I did give them antibiotics, and some recovered fully. What can you do?

I ordered eggs from a breeder in NM and hatched out seven gorgeous chicks in January. The three cockerels are growing up nicely and I have selected the best one to go in the breeding pen based on how well he meets SOP.
The pullets I am having a more difficult time determining which traits are more easily corrected. They all have five toes and correct combs. All have the correct tail set and top line.

The question is.......... one has a very white beard and the others have more "muddy" feathers with black showing through on the tips. The one with the white beard has the thinnest beard though. Is it easier to correct the thickness or the color? Which should I focus on first?
Thanks!

Hi everyone! Brand new to Faverolles and I got 5 females and a male from Ideal 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately the one I believe to be the male is turning out to have a scissor beak, although he looked normal upon receipt. This one is feathering in much more slowly than the others, too. I'm hoping I'm wrong about the scissor beak being male.

Little scissor beak.

Little one's wing.

Another larger, more feathered, probably female chick. Several have grey/black primaries like this.
