Faverolles Thread

Mine despise the heat. (So do I for that matter.) I had one come down with heatstroke last year, even here.

Maybe ice blocks? Misters?

I have no where to keep large ice blocks. I can freeze some small blocks of ice in the freezer, but I don't think they'd last very long in this heat. Egg production is down for the flock as a whole, but I'm not really worried about eggs, as long as the chickens weather the heat. I haven't had this problem before, so I'm at a bit of a loss. I'm worried about she will do while I'm at work next week.

Temps are up to and over 100 right now. All the chickens are in an open air pen, or like today, free ranging in the yard; most of the pen is shaded. I have waterers on either end of the pen, and I put some Save-A-Chick in the one where she tend to be near. The other hens are definitely hot, but not having the problems she is. Any other suggestions for helping her? - Thanks![/QUOTE]
You can try puting ice in their waterers to help keep it cool and give them treats like watermelon when its hot. We had alot of days over 100 degree last year and that is how I kept mine cool.

I have 2 roosters, both from the same hatchery, they are about 15 weeks old and so their rooster feathers are still coming in.

The one on the lower left of the pic is getting some yellow patches on his shoulders, the other is not. I’m curious if any one thinks those patches will persist or if at this age a bit is sloppy feathering is normal.

Any pics of a fav roo with shoulder patches like that? I looked on line but didn’t really see anything similar.

Not sure if this helps. I got my chicks on Craigslist so not sure if the breeding. How many chicks did you have to get at a hatchery and which did you use? I love faverolles now and eventually want more but need more space etc.

Thanks! Yeah I'm not sure I can tell much from that picture, but he looks like has some nice colors coming!

I purchased from Cackle Hatchery, not sure what their minimum is for shipping day old chicks (seems like 15 ?) , but they're close to me so I just picked them up at the hatchery... so that wasn't an issue in my case. I bought them sexed, 2 cockerels and 7 pullets plus 1 extra that they included, so 8 pullets. All healthy and all lived. One pullet has a slight cross beak. About half are lighter colored, and about half are darker salmon. All have some black in the beards, one has a lot, so certainly not show quality, but nice favs for hatchery birds from what I can tell. You can see a few pics on my coop page .

For my question about the roo on the left of my photo above , I suspect he might look like this, with the orange mix in the shoulder (swiped this image from feathersite):

Where as the one on the right might looks more like this, with a more even mahogany color (swiped this image from pinterest):

But I'm just guessing, was curious what others thought? Or if they change so much between 15 weeks and maturity that you can't really tell

Anyone on here from East Tennessee. I’m near Chattanooga and looking for 2-3 pullets. Willing to wait will next spring but wanted to see if anyone local had any I already have 2 roosters so need to be pullets only. Doesn’t need to be show quality or anything just love these sweet birds
